Tata Nano diesel India launch could take place in mid 2013

Speculations are galore that Tata Motors is all set to launch the Tata Nano diesel in India within the coming nine months that is the first quarter of 2013 before mid 2013. Tata Motors who is putting in a lot of effort in increasing the sales of the hatchback to 20,000every month which currently stands to roughly 10,000 units a month will get a huge boost with the launch of Nano diesel in the Indian car market. Rattan Tata eyes to sell around 200,000 units of the hatchback every month. With the current version of the hatchback which is offered only in petrol version the company is not able to achieve that mark.

However, with the launch of diesel version, it could be able to reach close to that number if not attain that monthly sales number. With an expected price tag of Rs 3 lakhs, this could be the lowest priced hatchback in the world, which would mean that the hatchback will have fair chances of getting a good response from the Indian customers. Tata Nano price in India for the diesel version could play as a trump card in the success of the hatchback in the Indian car market. The unique selling point of the petite small car would be its excellent fuel economy , if we go by rumours the hatchback is expected to return a fuel efficiency of 40 kilometres a litre. Tata Motors has been testing the hatchback for last few months, the small car was seen undergoing test runs in and around the roads of Pune.

Under the hood expect a 800cc, twin cylinder, turbocharged engine with common rail direct injection technology. The turbocharger will be taken from Honeywell, which is making a special sized turbo to fit into the Tata Nano diesel. On the other hand, Bosch will do the common rail injection system of the hatchback. Tata Nano diesel is anticipated to feature an open-able hatchback and a rerouted exhaust. If we look at the number of Nanos the company expects to sell every month, the current monthly sales number have fallen drastically.

At this point in time Tata Nano diesel could work wonders for the company and help in bringing up the plummeting sales of the hatchback. Given that the demand for the diesel powered cars in India is extremely, so high that the total number of vehicles sold in India every month, almost 60 per cent of those vehicles are packed with diesel engines. The fuel economy offered by the diesel engines are high in comparison to petrol engines also the price difference between petrol and diesel is also quite high. While the diesel engine powered cars are priced a bit high as compared to the petrol cars but the mileage and low price of the fuel makes it an obvious choice over the petrol engined cars.

Apart from the diesel version, the company si also developing the CNG version of the hatchback, the Tata Nano CNG which was also displayed at the 11th Auto Expo held at Pragati Maidan, in New Delhi, in the month of January earlier this year. The Tata Nano CNG would also return good mileage and will also give the option of keeping the petrol engine in the car. Tata Nano CNG will also help in increasing the monthly sales number of the hatchback to some extent, however the real magic will be done by Tata Nano diesel which promises to deliver a high fuel efficiency. The petrol version too offer a decent fuel economy which is more than 20 kmpl still it is struggling to make a mark in the A segment and not getting high sales as anticipated from the hatchback during the launch of the small car in India.

If something similar happens to the diesel versions and CNG version also, Tata Motors will be lsft with no other option. Could this be due to the outdated looks, extremely small size of the hatchback and non availability of any comfort and safety features of the hatchback? Does that mean that the company should think of giving a major facelift to the hatchback which would include a heavy makeover including the styling and cosmetic changes also. If this happens there will be no looking back for the hatchback. The company should also think on these lines and come up with a viable option, though there is no doubt that this would mean a lot of investment and the company is not at a condition to spend so much money on this project as it already has spent a lot of money on it with no major returns yet.
