Important Things about Various Different Types of Freezers
Before refrigerators or freezers have been invented, ice and snow was used to preserve food. Refrigerating or freezing is actually the process where heat is taken out from the body or a closed system in order to obtain a lower temperature.
The first cooling machine was designed by Oliver Evans in 1805.
There are two basic types of freezers: chest type and upright. As different freezers use different systems, they also include different features.
Typically, chest freezers are used for households that store large amounts of food. Because of its large size, they are stored in store rooms in the garage. Compared to upright freezers, these freezers are cheaper and very efficient.
Chest freezers are available in various sizes from 4 cubic feet to over 20 cubic feet. Despite its size, it is rather easy and it is economic to run. They also feature detachable baskets for smaller items and to separate different foods. Additionally the baskets allow customization in order to organize the entire freezer. The baskets are also perfect to maintain the food quality for a longer time.
One of the main advantages of these types of freezers is that they are cheap and are very energy efficient. New models typically have A++ grade and include such features as temperature warning system and fast-freezing.
On the other hand, upright freezers are great if you are looking for deep freezing and you need to store food for longer periods of time. They come in two models: manual defrost and frost-free models. These freezers are available in sizes ranging between 2 and 20 cubic feet. Compared to chest freezers, these take up significantly less floor space.
These freezing machines allow users to easily organize and pack the content of it. However, compared to chest freezers, upright freezers are expensive. Additionally, because of leakage, warm air can enter the machine and it is easy to lose cold air.
These freezers are great for average families as they include such divisions as compartments, shelves and slide-out baskets, which allows for various food products to be stored (for instance, freezing fish or to store milk products).
Freezers that are frost-free do not allow ice crystal formation so you should always check nutritional content and taste of the food. Another advantage of this model is that there is no smell at all because of the constant air circulation.
Nevertheless, these models are not cheap at all to operate. Additionally, they use up significantly more power than chest and upright freezers.
