Brogues: Ultimate Bro Shoes
Brogues are back for another year in the fashion headlights. Of course, they never really go out of fashion at all; they form part of the classic wardrobe, and as such, have a timeless look which never puts them out of date. As a style of footwear, they are very flexible; they suit a versatile range of clothing, ranging from informal clothes, such as jeans and chinos, to formal clothes, such as work suits.
Brogues are traditionally thought of as upmarket, tweedy, type shoes, most notable associated with the countryside gentlemen of Cambridge, Oxford, and the Home Counties. They were the outdoors shoe for men of standing – who would never be seen in a pair of peasant clogs. No, in the olden days, men’s brogues set the wearer apart from the rest; and they continue to do this, but now, instead of it being the moneyed elite that stand out, it is the fashion elite that the brogue sets from the crowd. In most cases, a man who ventures to wear a pair of brogues is usually a man who likes to experiment with fashion.
This season, autumn/winter 2012, will see a return of the country gentlemen look, with a modernised, and youthful twist. Expect to see plenty of skinny jeans or chinos this year, as well as some rather well-fitting, and sophisticated looking casual shirts. To stay ahead of this fashion, opt for earthy shades and colours, such as dark reds, browns mahogany and dark green. Try to accessories too, for instance, the man’s tote bag is set to be big news this year, as men turn to their feminine sides once more. Flat-caps, if you feel brave enough, will go well with this style, so too will a nice, thick knit scarf or cardigan. However, remember that this look is only for the brave, it won’t suit everyone.
Even if the above look is not for you, you can still wear brogues. They suit most fashions, but in general, men should avoid wearing brogues with any clothes that are too informal. They will never look good with a pair of tracksuit bottoms…although, we may soon be eating our words here, because this year is witnessing the birth of the brogue/trainer, if this takes off, it might be completely normal to see the tracksuit/brogue combination. For not, though, avoid a formal style shoe with informal style clothes.
