Singapore Airlines In The New Millennium!
In the new millennium it was obvious that Singapore Airlines would do everything possible to maintain its image of a trustworthy and customer oriented airline. A decision in September 2000 reiterated this very point. Singapore Airlines placed an order for 25 Airbus A3XX, before the aircraft were even named as the A380s. In a deal worth USD 8.6 billion, 10 aircraft were placed on a firm order were options were made available for 15 more.
A slight hiccup in the delivery of the first Airbus A380 delayed plans of a full blown campaign which was made ready especially to welcome passengers on to the amazing A380. A stickler for perfection in every little thing that they did, the management at Singapore Airlines was miffed at the delay by Airbus.
Boeing now stood as the manufacturer of choice for Singapore Airlines and an order for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner was placed in the year 2006. 20 Boeing 787-9s were placed on firm order were options for another 20 of the aircraft were sought.
After subsequent delays by the manufacturer, the first Singapore airlines A380 flight took off from Singapore with 455 passengers and landed at the Sydney Airport on the 25th of October, 2007. The entire operation received a lot of attention from everyone across the globe. Singapore Airlines in a gesture synonymous with its image donated the entire revenue generated from this epic flight to various charities the very next day.
The year 2008 was another year of many firsts too, especially related to the Business Class. While Singapore was always a favored destination for business honchos and holiday makers alike, Singapore Airlines decided to step up its services a notch to give more care and attention to its Business Class fliers. The airline operated its first flight between Singapore and New York with only Business Class seats on its aircraft, a move that delighted the business honchos and jet setters. The flight also made the airline the first carrier to operate an all-Business Class flight between Asia and the United States. Only a few months later, the airline also began the same service to the Los Angeles airport too.
Now everyone is aware of the hype that the A380 created. The much awaited A380 is till today among the best commercial aircraft that the world has seen and is a major part of the Singapore Airlines operations. The aircraft is used for flight to many major cities across the globe including Zurich, Melbourne, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and even dual flights to London and Sydney. The year 2012 also saw two new destinations of New York and Frankfurt being added on to the A380 list.
With all the right moves, Singapore Airlines has surely carried its success into the new millennium!
