Taking care of your T-shirts
As far as casual clothing is concerned, nothing defines the niche better than a T-shirt. In fact, it is very hard for one to claim that they are dressed casually if they’re not in a t-shirt. The t-shirt is a very important part of popular culture and everyone often has a favourite t-shirt that they refuse to throw out no matter how old it is or even if they have outgrown it years ago. Compared to other clothing, it is very easy to take care of a t-shirt. Graphic t-shirts may need a bit more care, but following the right instructions will ensure that a t-shirt lasts, and is wearable, for a very long time. If not properly taken care of, once can expect the t-shirt to start losing colour and for the graphics to deteriorate.
A person does not have to be involved in the world of fashion to understand the importance of the label; not the brand label, but rather the label with instructions for taking care of the piece of clothing. The label issued by the manufacturer is for allowing the t-shirt owner to prolong the life of the clothing, while retaining its looks. The t-shirt owner should ignore the instruction label at their own peril.
It is very obvious that the best way to prolong the life of a t-shirt is to wear it sparingly. However, most of the damage to a t-shirt is done during the cleaning process. It has always been customary to wash clothes in warm water, since detergent does a much better job cleaning when the water is hot. Nowadays there are detergents available specifically to allow for washing clothes in cold water. T-shirts should always be washed in cold water and the lack of a suitable detergent can no longer be used as an excuse for not doing so.
When the t-shirts are being washed in a washing machine, care should be taken to ensure that they are washed in a medium cycle. High-wash cycles should be avoided at all costs since they end up doing more harm than good. Similarly, strong detergents may be great for removing stains, but are not so great for the fabric. It is recommended that t-shirts always be washed with a mild detergent that is easy on the fabric and helps preserve colour. In order to remove stains, it is better to wash the t-shirt twice in a mild detergent rather than once with a strong detergent.
T-shirts should never be put in the dryer. They will dry much more quickly in a dryer, but it will shrink every time it is exposed to the heat inside a dryer. The best way to dry a t-shirt is to leave it hanging outside on a clothesline, to dry naturally. Direct sunlight can cause the colour on a t-shirt to fade, so care should be taken to ensure that the t-shirts are dried inside out. As far as ironing is concerned, the label on the t-shirt should provide the right instructions. Usually, it is best not to iron any t-shirts with graphics on them.
