Abu Road – many places to see
Abu Road is a city in Sirohi district of Rajasthan. It lies 27 km south-east of Mount Abu. The old name of Abu Road is Kharadi.
The RIICO Industrial Area here is spread over an area of 2,000 acres. The main industries here are marble and granite, miniature cement plants, bags, synthetic yarns, mineral grinding, resin and insulators. The railway’s diesel shed, which is located here, provides employment to a large number of people and holds an important place in the town’s economy. The Diesel Shed was commissioned as a metre gauge shed in 1966.
Among the places of interest in and around Abu Road are Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, Chandravati, Garasia Villages, Jirawala, Bhadrakali Temple, Varman, Ambaji, Mount Abu, Mungathala, Gandhi Park and Pawa Puri (a Jain temple complex).
Nearby Mount Abu, a famous hill station, is known for its attractions like Achalgarh, Guru Shikhar, Dilwara Temples, Adhar Devi Temple, Doodh Baori and Nakki Lake. Visitors can also see the important places such as Shri Raghunathji Temple, Toad Rock, Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary, Sunset Point and Honeymoon Point.
Achalgarh is a well-known village in Aravalli Range. This village has the Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple and Achalgarh Fort. Guru Shikhar, the highest mountain peak in Mount Abu, is popular for its temples. The Jain Dilwara Temples are the other major tourist attractions. They include five temples of Vimal Vasahi, Luna Vasahi, Pithalhar, Khartar Vasahi and Mahavir Swami. The Adhar Devi Temple can be reached by climbing 365 steep carved steps.
Doodh Baori is a sacred well, which has milk coloured water. Nakki Lake is an artificial lake. This lake is very close to the Sunset Point, Shri Raghunathji Temple, Toad Rock and the Maharaja Jaipur Palace.
Madhuban in Mount Abu is the headquarters of World Spiritual University. There are lectures and spiritual courses for devotees and interested students in the university which is run by Brahma Kumaris, a well-known sect.
Mount Abu, located at an altitude of 1220 metres above sea level, was earlier known as Arbudaanchal, It is the only hill station of Rajasthan. It has a pleasant climate all round the year. In mythology, it is said that Saint Vasistha performed his final rites and retired to the hills of Mount Abu due to his differences with sage Vishvamitra.
A medium-sized airstrip is constructed here to land small jets and helicopters. The nearest domestic airport is Udaipur which (135 km) while the international airport is at Ahmedabad (200 km). There is a railway station at Abu Road. February to June and September to December is the peak tourist season of Mount Abu. Many also visit Mount Abu and Abu Road during the summer season to escape the heat of the plain areas.
