Jaisalmer Fort Jaisalmer – A Marvelous Fort in the Golden City
Jaisalmer is a desert city situated in the state of Rajasthan. The city is famous for its old mansions, known by Havelis. The main Havelis in Jaisalmer are Patwon-ki-Haveli, Salam Singh-ki-Haveli, Nathmalji-ki-Haveli and Haveli Shreenath. The city is popularly known as “The Golden City” as the yellow sandstones are used for the construction of its buildings.
The name Jaisalmer came after its founder Maharawal Jaisal Singh who established the city in 1156 AD. Jaisalmer Fort Jaisalmer is one of the largest forts in the world which is also constructed by Maharawal Jaisal Singh. This fort is situated amidst the great Thar Desert on Trikuta Hill. Jaisalmer Fort Jaisalmer is also called the ‘Golden Fort’ or ‘Sonar Quila’ as the color of the sandstone used for the construction of the fort. The fort rises like a mirage from the sand. The fort contains three layers of walls and witnessed a lot of battles. Ala-ud-din Khilji attacked and captured the fort in the 13th century and kept it for around 9 years. During these days, the Rajput women committed Jauhar in the fort. The second battle is in 1541 when Mughal emperor Humayun attacked the fort.
The fort has some major attractions like Raj Mahal (Royal Palace), Jain Temples, Laxminath Temple, four massive gateways and Merchant Havelis. These havelis are made by rich merchants who inspired by the classic style of the royal buildings. These havelis have beautifully carved ceilings and walls. This fantastic artwork of the Havelis shows the craftsmanship of the Muslims. The fort is situated 30 m over the city. As the Taj Mahal in full moon night, Jaisalmer Fort Jaisalmer offers a wonderful view after nightfall. At one point of time the entire population of the city used to live within the fort. Now they shifted to the valleys of Trikuta Hill because of the over population.
The climate of Jaisalmer is pretty hot as it is a desert area. The temperature in the summer rises up to 45 degree Celsius at the maximum and falls to 25 degree Celsius at the minimum and in the winter season the maximum rises to 24 and the minimum drops to 7 degree Celsius. The best time to visit the city of Jaisalmer is from October to March.
The nearest airport is in Jodhpur which is at a distance of about 300 km. The railway station is Jaisalmer Junction which is very close to the city. The city of Jaisalmer is well connected to the other cities by road. New Delhi is 800 km away from the city of Jaislalmer. A daily bus runs from Jaipur to Jaisalmer. Private vehicles and camel ride are some other options to reach the city.
