Employing Effective Dallas Bird Control

Birds landing on and nesting on buildings can be quite a problem for the building owners in Dallas, as they are in other parts of the world. Living in Dallas and causing these problems are birds like buzzards, vultures, starlings, pigeons, grackles and more. However, with a bit of innovative planning, Dallas bird control can be achieved.

Methods for controlling problem birds vary with the building, the area, and the owner’s desires. There are many types, from laser and ultrasonic scaring devices, to simple spikes that make it impossible for the birds to land. Depending on the area in which the device is to be employed, one method may work better than others. For example, laser bird repellents work best in enclosed or semi-enclosed areas. Spikes are great for building rooftops, but may be too unattractive for more visible areas.

Each type of device has its benefits and draw-backs. Bird netting is great for keeping birds out of specific areas, but is not very good for preventing them from landing on a roof, for example. Visual deterrents may work on some bird species but not others. Sonic bird controllers use bird distress calls and other noises to scare birds away, but the sounds created by the bird controller may be unpleasant to some humans as well.

Of course, the cost is a major factor in deciding what type of bird repellent to use. Spikes are cheap, but unsightly and only effective in the area that has been spiked. Laser repellents are effective and can work larger areas, but can be costly. Ultrasonic devices emit an extremely loud noise in the range not audible to humans, but which can be heard by birds and other pest animals. They are only effective within the range of the sound, and though less expensive than laser repellents, can also be pricey. All of these trade-offs must be considered when choosing a bird repelling device.

When choosing a device, consider that devices with more complex workings are more likely to require specialized repair. Shock strips are pieces of plastic and wire that are connected to a battery and are used to deliver non-lethal shocks when birds land on them. This trains the birds not to land on that area of the building, or perhaps the entire building in general. The strips can degrade in the weather, and the battery can eventually die, but the plastic is tough and the battery is replaceable. While a laser bird repellent might need a skilled technician to fix it, most anyone can replace a shock strip battery.

Deciding what is needed from the bird repellent system is the most important part of deciding which kind to use. To keep birds from landing on a rooftop, bird spikes might be employed. A lot of spikes would need to be used, but they are inexpensive and easily replaced by the building’s existing maintenance crew if they break. Or, an ultrasonic device might be employed. It is smaller and requires much less effort to set up. However, if it breaks, it would likely need to be taken into a repair shop and repaired by a trained technician.

To keep birds out of an inner atrium in a building, bird netting across the top would be most practical. If bird netting was deemed too unsightly, however, a laser or ultrasonic device might be used. Again, the trade-off is the cheaper, easier to repair bird netting versus the more expensive, harder to repair, but less obtrusive laser or ultrasound device.

Birds are an important part of nature, and most people enjoy seeing them out and about. But that doesn’t mean they are always welcome on buildings! They can cause damage with their activities, dirty the buildings with their droppings, and can get into places where they can endanger themselves or people. Proper, humane Dallas bird control is best for both humans and our flying friends.
