Srilankan Airlines: A Proud 33 Years In The Skies!
SriLankan Airlines has completed a wonderful 33 years in the commercial aviation sector and the airline has every reason to be proud of its journey. From humble beginnings in the year 1979, originally as Air Lanka, the airline has today achieved a lot of feats and accomplishments over the years and is today one of the finest airlines in Asia. The world too has time and again recognized the prowess of the airline when it comes to customer service with a personal touch and it is this wonderful sense of hospitality that has helped the airline complete a glorious 33 years.
The first flight of Air Lanka, as SriLankan Airlines was then known, took to the skies on the 1st of September 1979, and the airline has not looked back since. Growing from strength to strength and accomplishing milestone after milestone, the airline not only collected plenty of awards along the way but also made sure that it won a lot of hearts too.
The airline started off its operations with only 2 aircraft in its fleet, a couple of Boeing 707-300Bs and that too leased ones. Today the airline has 22 aircraft under its wings flying to various countries across the globe. The aircraft in its current fleet include Airbus 320s, the Airbus 330s, as well as the Airbus A340s which help fly passengers to almost 60 destinations across more than 30 countries. Many cities in Europe, Australia, India, the Far East, Canada, North America, the Middle East, and neighboring India see SriLankan Airlines flights landing at their airports and taking their citizens to the wonderful island nation.
The year 2011-2012 was an extraordinary one for the airline as it carried a record number of passengers to various destinations. The numbers stood in excess of 3 million passengers and showed an increase of more than 20% over the previous year’s figures. The number of passengers is not the only yardstick through which the success of the airline can be measured. The many awards that SriLankan Airlines has collected along the way are a clear indicator of the wonderful work that the airline has been putting into its iconic aviation image.
Among the many awards that the airline has to its credit are the ‘World’s Friendliest Cabin Staff Award’ by Skytrax, the Etihad Global Excellence Award for Best Regional Caterer, the World’s Most Reliable Operator of Airbus A330s and A340s by Airbus Industrie, as well as the ‘Best Airline in South Asia Award’ by the Travel Trade Gazette, from a long list of many others.
