Sunspel’s sweats draw on the past, but are fit for the present
There are many types of British clothing in which Sunspel (http://www.sunspel.com) has had a formative or later influence since its 1860 foundation. Whether in the development of fabrics that have been instrumental in combining timeless style with basic wearability, or the creation of the world’s first T-shirts as they are now known, the label has maintained a focus on heritage-conscious innovation that continues with its selection of hoodies, sweat tops and pants.
The term “sweater” can be used in reference to various types of knit garments that are designed to cover the torso and arms, and that can be worn alone or over a shirt or T-shirt. While they were once always made from wool, other possible options today include cotton, synthetic fibres or a combination of the two. Sunspel goes beyond the most basic obligations for its own range of heritage clothing, offering its sweats in a super soft, 100% loopback cotton that ensures maximum quality and comfort.
This cotton fabric is heavier than that used elsewhere in Sunspel’s luxury mens clothing range, with the loops of cotton on the back of the fabric giving a fleece that traps air and, in the process, creates a warm insulating layer. This helps to ensure the basic wearability that distinguishes Sunspel from other labels, which is further assured by the likes of the slim leg and more tailored fit of the Loopback Track Pant that can be specified in either Grey or Navy Melange.
Such sumptuous cotton and a slim, tailored fit are also features of the Zip Front Hoody, which is ideal for packing in an overnight bag for a rural weekend away. Another essential for the man’s wardrobe amongst the Sunspel selection of sweats is the most basic – albeit, superbly understated – Sweat Top, which also enjoys an on-trend, close fit and is as soft and easy to wear as any other item in the range.
However, it is arguably Sunspel’s printed sweat tops that especially illustrate the label’s deftness in drawing on its trailblazing past and extensive archive. These include one top depicting a robot riding an octopus, as well as another featuring a playful image of a gent fending off the wind with a somewhat malfunctioning umbrella. Less quirky are the more technical aspects of these sweat tops, as they feature the same loopback fabric as the rest of the range. This combination makes them the ideal accompaniment to a quality T-shirt and jeans on those late summer evenings.
Today, the Sunspel range of sweats is distinguished by many of the same characteristics that have long helped to make the brand a byword for basic, everyday luxury clothing.
