Halloween is a day when ghosts, ghouls and goblins roam the streets, you might have an encounter with a vampire or become bewitched by a cackling witch. It is a day of escapism, when people step out of their mundane daily lives to carve pumpkins, trick or treat and eat sweet treats, all in fancy dress. Everyone likes a bit of a scare, and if you’re looking for things to do in London over the pagan holiday then there is no better place to be than the London Bridge
Experience and London Tombs.
The London attraction, which has been the winner of the UK’s best year-round scare attraction at the Screamie awards for the past three years, is hosting its annual PhoboPhobia event. “See it. Feel it. Fear it,” taunts the website.
The family-friendly part of the Halloween show takes visitors on a journey through the haunting history of London, featuring visits from the brutal Jack the Ripper and the fearful Pumpkin Man.
During these history behind the horror shows, which take place during the day, the audience will travel back in time to explore 2,000 years of London Bridge’s dark Halloween history. Brilliant actors and stunning special effects add to the scary atmosphere.
Those who are easily perturbed need not fear either, with the Guardian Angel show of the London tombs providing a bit of a lesser scare. There will also be pumpkin carving and face painting for all the family to get everyone into the spirit of the thrilling day.
However, those who enjoy being scared should opt for the Circus of Fear in the evening. “We dare you to come face to face with your fears,” the website boasts.
“Whether it’s creepy clowns, psycho doctors or the dentist’s drill, we guarantee the scariest, most exhilarating and disturbing Halloween yet. Touch the blood stained walls, taste death in the air and feel your way through the haunted catacombs of London Bridge”.
There are plenty of new scenes to explore at the Tombs, including a Dickensian Bar and a Runaway Train, with Halloween also seeing the unveiling of Hell’s Kitchen complete with a Cannibal Chef, and the Circus of Fear, which is piled high with terrifying clowns.
The London Bridge Experience is terrifying the whole year round too, with visitors invited to experience a London long gone, meeting Romans, Vikings and Pickpockets as well as surprises in the dark and a few early jokes.
Visitors will take in the tale of Queen Boudica’s battle with the Romans in AD60 before crossing the cavernous infinity floor, blinded by thick fog, to happen upon the London of 1012, which was oppressed under the rule of the fearsome Viking King Olaf, who pulled down London Bridge.
They can then go on to learn all about the gruesome hanging, drawing and quartering with an expert executioner and his two Giant Gambian Pouched Rats who will show you all the blood details. From then, people will learn about the trading of 1600, when shops lined London bridge, before running down it to escape the great fire of 1666.
The bravest visitors will also enjoy a trip to the London Tombs, which was once a plague pit. According to the website, “the London Tombs will excite you, scare you, make your pulse race and your throat sore from screaming”. It promises plenty of surprises, thrills, horrors and frights.
