Vrindavan – the childhood playground for Lord Krishna
Vrindavan is a famous Hindu religious place in India, and is located in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. Also known as Brindavan or Vraj, the town is believed to be the place where Lord Krishna spent a major part of his childhood. Vrindavan is just 10 km away from Mathura, considered to be Lord Krishna’s birthplace. It is located on the banks of the Yamuna and is at a distance of 150 km south of Delhi.
With its rich religious history, it is not surprising that the town is known for its many beautiful temples, most of them dedicated to Lord Krishna. Some of the most well known temples here are the Madan Mohan Temple located near the Kali Ghat which is the oldest temple in the town, the Garud Govind Temple, the Banke Bihari Temple, the Radha Vallabh Temple, the Jaipur Temple built by Sawai Madho Singh II, the Sri Radha Raman Mandir, the Shahji Temple, the Rangaji Temple, Govind Dev (Govindaji) Temple, Radha Damodar Mandir, Shri Maa Katyayani Mandir, Chintaharan Hanuman Mandir, Shree Radha Ras Bihari Ashta Sakhi Temple, Sri Sri Radha Govinda Temple, and the Sri Vrindavan-Chandra Mandir. Thousands of pilgrims visit the town regularly to pray and stay in the many ashrams which throng the town.
The town was known for its greenery and there was a huge forest area surrounding it which was home to a vast variety of birds and animals. However, in the face of rapid urbanization this forest area has reduced substantially In recent years, real estate business has seen a boom in Vrindavan and quite a few housing projects have come up here.
An interesting fact about Vrindavan is that it has the maximum number of widows living here since ancient times which gives it the name ‘City of Widows’. This is because old Hindu traditions which did not allow widowed women to remarry and made them into social outcasts who moved into the town to get solace and refuge in the holy place. There are many ashrams here which is home to such women as well as destitute.
Being a religious town, the place is visited almost throughout the year especially during the times of religious festivals. Tourists throng the place during the Brahmotsava Festival, which is held for ten days after Holi. Winter is the best season to come here as the weather is pleasant compared to the hot summer season.
