The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is just a shade larger, thicker and heavier than previous models such as the Kindle 4 – and remains very manageable for one-handed reading.
Buy Kindle Paperwhite. It’s great for highlighting text and navigating but makes it ridiculously easy to bump through pages by mistake – a ‘hold’ switch would make sense.
Cheap Kindle Paperwhite. Amazon has given the Kindle Paperwhite a new OS, which feels much more like a tablet operating system as opposed to the neutered and plainOSs on past devices.
When you wake the Paperwhite, you’re now prompted to swipe across the display to resume your session. Once you hit the homescreen, it’s much closer to what the Kindle Fire offers than the company’s previous e-readers.
Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite is a significant upgrade to Amazon’s flagship Kindle e-reader. By including a light, a high-resolution display, and dramatically updated software, the $119 Kindle Paperwhite catches up to the competition in some ways and exceeds it in others. It’s the first e-reader with both a relatively high-resolution display and a built-in light; and in the Paperwhite, those two features make a compelling combination.
The big news about the Kindle Paperwhite is suggested by its name: It has a built-in light that, when adjusted to maximum brightness, makes the Kindle’s display look closer to white than to the tinted, newspaper gray typical of E Ink’s electrophoretic ink screens (including this one, when the light is off). The Paperwhite is also the first “traditional” Kindle to come with its own light; on previous models, you had to clip on a separate reading light or use a case with a light built into it if you wanted to read in the dark.
So while the upgraded screen resolution, new fonts, and faster page turns undoubtedly contribute to this Kindle’s superiority over its predecessors, the Paperwhite’s light makes the whole product shine.
Physically, the new Kindle Paperwhite shares many similarities with the Kindle Touch: Both e-readers weigh 7.5 ounces (0.47 pound), and they have almost identical dimensions, differentiated by a mere tenth of an inch in height and width, and a rounding error in depth. The Nook with Glowlight is very close to the Kindles in weight, at 6.95 ounces (0.43 pound).
I found the Paperwhite pleasant to hold in one hand, and its rounded edges helped make it comfortable to grip.
Personally, we are big fans of the changes to the hardware. The home button wasn’t exactly needed with such a simple user interface, and the improved soft-touch black matte backing certainly is nice. Although the concave back on the NOOK is still something we favor. Overall impressions on the hardware are excellent. Build quality feels top notch, and screen durability seems improved over its predecessor too. Take a peek at our hands-on and software overview video below.
But, like the Nook, the light source creates a problem: blossoms of LED light appear at the bottom of the screen. It’s fainter than the light-source bleed found on the Nook, but it’s still there. It’s only annoying at the bottom of the screen, but it breaks up the flow of an otherwise flawless screen.
Fortunately, the attention Amazon has paid to the rest of the screen makes up for these lighting hiccups. Text on the Kindle Paperwhite is darker and crisper than what I’ve seen on previous-generation Kindles. Also, the background color of the screen is lighter than previous Kindles. It’s less “cardboard” and more “coffee with too much milk.”
I should also point out that Barnes & Noble just dropped the light-up Nook’s price to $120 — and that’s without ads. But I’d still recommend the Kindle Paperwhite. It has the better software features, the stellar screen, and the unstoppable ecosystem. It keeps its crown as king of the e-readers.
