An Attitude of Gratitude – The Key to Happiness in Life

Well, many of us are now in the spirit of celebrating and enjoying our end of the year holidays. While you are celebrating the festive season, I really hope that you are also taking time for self reflection and practice an attitude of gratitude.

William James said, “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.”

This saying is very very prevailing, especially in today society that is surrounded by an industry that always makes us feel discontent and inadequate. We are always bombarded by messages that we are not successful enough, we are not beautiful enough, we are not sexy enough, and so on and so forth.

From childhood to adulthood, many of us are familiar with this kind of message as it rings loud and clear: “We are simply not good enough!” Perhaps you have suffered from such preconception too.

How many times have you found yourself saying, “If only I have the money, then I could be happy” The problem is that if we get caught up in this way of thinking we will never be happy because there is always something more that we think we should pursue. So, that is why many people end up in chasing their own tails nowadays.

Paul Reid said, “Poverty is a state of mind often brought on by the neighbours new car”.

This statement is so true. We often feel that the grass is greener in our neighbour yard. When we see that others are more successful than us, we feel destitute because we are not as successful.

But, in reality, if we can put thing in a better perspective, we are not as bad, we only think that we are in a poverty stricken state. Now, this frame of mind can destroy us completely because our mind believes that we are poor! You need to get yourself out of this poor state of mind if you want to live happily and successfully.

This state of mind is purely relative to whom you are comparing yourself to. If you were to change your thinking and look at the homeless, then you would realize how truly fortunate you are.

You have a roof over your head, and food on the table. Okay, so maybe it’s not your dream house. Believe it or not, there are still a ton of people around the globe who do not even have this basic neccessity.

That is why it is so important that we cultivate an attitude of gratitude so that we can have a more positive outlook in life. Otherwise we will be chasing our own tail and always get stuck in a never-ending rat race. This will lead you to more stress and depression.

Without an attitude of gratitude, we simply can’t live happily in our life. So, as we are approaching a holidays and festive seasons, why not we use this time as a self reflection as well so that it can help lift up our spirits and give us major improvement in out life.

With an attitude of gratitude, we are able to feel content and live happily. It gives us a clearer focus on life as it really is. We will be content with what we have and therefore our attitude will bring us a spirit of peace and contentment.
