Benefits of Completing a Preparation Communications Program First
As with any field, communication and media industries require a strong media education foundation. For those who have not been accepted to programs such as Broadcasting and Film, Journalism or Advertising and Media Management as well as those who may be undecided about the direction of their career, having a solid base is an essential step.
Centennial College’s Communications and Media Foundations offering is just that. Here’s how it works and how it benefits students.
Creative exploration and experimentation are used to study contemporary digital and social media production tools.
While developing students’ communications skills, this program also introduces students to the communications and media industries.
Faculty members are actually media industry professionals who can share personal anecdotes that enhance student learning.
Specific courses include: Multimedia, Essential English Skills, Exploring Digital Culture (at two levels), Introduction to Media Writing, Developing Communications Portfolio Skills and more.
Because students apply theoretical principles to produce practical, focused written communications and media solutions, they receive well-rounded knowledge.
Knowledge of communications and media workplaces, environments and practices to develop students’ job search strategies, and early career success strategies are included.
Research is an essential part of the media industry so as part of their media education, students learn to research and describe media forms, audiences, platforms, and “traditional” and non-traditional communication methods.
Part of the undertaking is learning to communicate. As such, students become familiar with using appropriate vocabulary, terminology, basic numeracy and communicative strategies necessary in the communications and media environment.
Additionally, because written word is so vital to media and communications industries, this communication program teaches students to write and present in basic narrative formats for a variety of media platforms.
A personal aspect of this foundational offering sees students examine their roles and responsibilities as global citizens in personal and professional life. They send time examining beliefs, values and behaviours that form individual and community identities and the basis for respectful relationships.
After completing their training, students will receive an offer to Centennial College’s Advertising & Marketing Communications Management, Journalism or Broadcasting and Film Advanced Diploma programs.
Those interested in attending this program are required to have completed at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or have mature applicant status (19 years or older). In addition, students should have completed Grade 12 English C or U, or equivalent (minimum grade required) or take the Centennial College English Skills Assessment for Admission.
