Chardham Yatra – A journey to spiritual pilgrimage of India
Uttarakhand is known as “abode of the gods” or Devbhumi, belong some of the holiest Hindu shrines and for more than a thousand years, pilgrims have been visiting the region in the hopes of salvation and purification from sin. Char-Dham are the most important Hindu pilgrimage circuit in the Indian Himalayas. Located in the lofty laps of Himalayas in the Garhwal section of the state of Uttarakhand. Chardham are the holy centres of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath – collectively the Chardham or four sacred spots. According to the scriptures of Hinduism, these are the most sacred of all pilgrimages, and undertaking a journey to them will not just wash away one’s sins but ensure release from the cycle of birth and death. It is also said that heaven and earth converge in these holy spots, and to be born or die here is a boon only the very fortunate have. The Chardham must be visited from left to right -beginning with Yamunotri, going on to Gangotri, Kedarnath and culminating the journey at Badrinath. This route follows the Hindu tradition of parikrama or clockwise circumambulation. One should keep in mind the best time to visit these places, before embarking on his journey. The Char Dhams are open for the general public from first week of May till November depending upon the weather conditions in the region. The four shrines remain closed due to heavy snowfall in the region during December to April. Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River and the seat of the Goddess Yamuna in Hindu mythology. The temple of Yamunotri falls on the left bank and was originally constructed by Maharaj Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal.Near the temple are three hot springs. The most important, Surya Kund, is a tank full of boiling water into which rice and potatoes are dipped to be cooked and taken as “prasad”. Near the Kund, a rock slab, the “Divya Shila” is worshipped before puja is offered to the black marble idol of Yamuna.
Gangotri is the most sacred spot where Ganga , the stream of life, touched earth for the first time. The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga from Devprayag onwards where it meets the Alaknanda. The temple is closed on Diwali day every year and is reopened in May. During this time, the idol of the goddess is kept at Mukhba village, near Harsil.
Kedarnath is amongst the holiest pilgrimage for the devoutee Hindu, located in in Rudraprayag district. Kedarnath, where a form of the Lord Shiva is venerated as one of the twelve jyotirling (linga of light). Kedarnath hosts one of the holiest Hindu temples, the Kedarnath Temple, and is a popular destination for Hindu pilgrims from all over the world. In kedarnath alone there are about more than 200 shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva the protector and the destroyer. Testing the fervor and dedication of the pilgrims, the temple is not directly reachable by road. The only way being, a 14 km trek path from Gaurikund.
Badrinath, the seat of the god Vishnu in his aspect of Badrinarayan, is the most important of the four sites in India’s Char Dham pilgrimage. Situated in the hills of Himalaya, at the height of 10,248 feet above sea level. Situated in the lap of Nar-Narayan Parvat, with the towering Neelkanth peak (6,597mts.) in the background, Badrinath is one of the most revered Hindu shrines of India. Along the river Alaknanda, the temple is essentially a Lord Vishnu shrine.
