Prevacid is a drug that belongs to a group of medications known as the proton pump inhibitors. It is used to treat acid reflux and prevent ulcers that develop in the stomach and the intestine. This drug, though very effective, is not meant for providing immediate relief to symptoms of heartburn.

Prevacid is used to treat other health condition in combination with antibiotics. Ensure that you use this medication as directed by your doctor. Read the medication guide that is provided to you with this medication. Do not take this drug on your own and never overdose.

Many people confuse heartburn with the first symptoms of a heart attack, when in reality, both are completely different health conditions. But, it is advised that you seek emergency medical attention if you are suffering from chest pain, nausea or sweating. Ask a doctor if it is safe for you to use Prevacid if you have a history of liver problems. You may need to adjust your doses in certain cases.

Also, if you are taking sucralfate, do not take it with Prevacid as it your body will not be able to absorb Prevacid. Wait for 30 minutes after taking sucralfate. Complete the whole course as prescribed by your doctor even if your symptoms improve before the completion of the course. Prevacid 24HR is to be taken only once every 24 hours for a period of 14 days. Most people who use this drug see an improvement before the course is over. You should allow a period of 14 days to pass before you take another 14 day treatment course. Contact a health care professional or doctor if you notice additional symptoms that need treatment. Lansoprazloe is the chief ingredient of this drug. You should not take Prevacid if you are allergic to lansoprazole. Consult your doctor immediately if you suffer from the following.

  • Chest pain
  • Weight loss
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Pain with swallowing
  • Bloody or black stools
  • Vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Heartburn that has lasted for more than 3 months

This is not a complete list of side effects of this drug. Contact your doctor if you notice any unusual effects in your body or behavior. Some health conditions are treated with a combination of antibiotics and Prevacid pill. Use all drugs as prescribed. Consult your doctor if you wish to change the dosage of the medication. Use of this drug is known to increase the risk of bone fracture in the waist, spine and hip. Even though old men are more prone to this side effect, everyone taking it is at equal risk.

This FDA approved drug is not expected to harm an unborn baby; but if you are pregnant or about to get pregnant, avoid taking it. Also, it is not known if Prevacid passes in to breast milk so do not take it if you are a breastfeeding a baby. Children younger than one year should not be given this drug.
