Hypnosis – Unraveling The Mysteries Behind It
Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of a lot of myths created by layman’s imagination. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don’t regard them to be serious scientific endeavours. Given below are some common misconceptions associated with hypnosis, and the real truth behind them.
There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. It is a very simple technique, which can be understood easily with the help of psychology and other scientific methods. The authenticity of hypnosis is doubted even by people who have seen it working on subjects. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not displaying enough will power to withstand the influence of their words. But that is simply not the truth. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally strong and are trying their best to avoid the spell.
That hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness is another myth that has been doing the rounds. A person under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but stays completely aware of the happenings around him. That individual is just in a relaxed state where the attention spans are very high and the person can accept new inputs easily.
Another misconception, which has been propagated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of the human population. The researchers are to some extent true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis technique without considering individual differences in nature and disposition. One hypnosis technique for all is not a viable solution as different individuals fall under different character types, and therefore respond to different techniques.
Meditation and hypnosis are usually thought to be the same by people. However, interaction between the subject and the practitioner is indispensable in hypnosis, while meditation is like an appointment with the self without any communication involved. The state of trance and the state of hypnosis are entirely different from each other too. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, while the very basis of the hypnosis method is communication.
It is commonly thought that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot bring changes in physique or in behavioural patterns of an individual. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is abnormal to the body. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and chain smoking by raising inspiration levels in an individual.
Undergoing hypnotherapy is a fine way to lead a happy and satisfying life, and hence one should not pay heed to the myths, and go for hypnotic sittings with an open mind.
