The right way to establish a camp
Camping is among the most popular hobbies of this generation. There has been a 12% increase in the number of people registering at recognized camping sites around the country, and outdoors stores are reporting significant increases in their sales compared to the last couple of years. While we enjoy camping, setting up camp the right way is a skill that we need to learn. Experts have put together manuals for families to use while setting up camp, and we’ve brought together some of the best tips from these manuals.
Unpack carefully – You must have packed a great many things for your camping. Unpack them carefully and lay them out first. Make sure all your equipment is safe and nothing has been spilt.
The tent comes first – Outdoors, you may not have space to take shade under in case the weather turns suddenly. Do not start playing around or exploring the area before you set up your tent. Select a good site to pitch your tent. The ideal location should be flat, protected from winds, and with good drainage so any accumulated water during a rain can flow away with ease. Set up your tent carefully and make sure it is done right before you head out.
Make sure all your essentials are handy –Emergency supplies, water, flashlights, rainwear, insect repellants, keep all of the handy and tell everyone where they are. Keep these supplies away from the ground, and make sure they can’t get wet.
Inform everyone – Three things everyone in your camp needs to know – the location of the camp in terms of compass / GPS readings and nearby landmarks, where all the emergency supplies and the medical kit are kept, and the time they are expected back if they go out exploring. Nightfall is quite swift in the wild, and you don’t want to go searching for your search party only to discover that they haven’t kept track of time. These are especially useful tips in case there is no cellphone coverage.
Always carry extra water – Whether you get water in the camp location or not, never go out of the tent without water in your backpack. And while packing for your camp, pack iodine pellets so everyone can purify their own water if needed.
Get everyone involved – Don’t set up camp by yourself if you’re traveling with your family. The right way to set up camp is to inculcate in them the habit of good camping. Assign tasks to all – fetching wood for cooking fires, cleaning, washing, whatever needs to be done, delegate to everyone and make them a part of the camping experience.
Stay Tidy – Always keep your campsite clean and tidy. While leaving the camp, make sure that you restore the surroundings to how you found them. Remove all traces of your camp, snuff out all fires carefully, and put back the branches and foliage you removed to set up camp.
