If you see a warning light, what should you do?

The odd thing about a warning light is that there is we tend to ignore it and sometimes we pay immediate attention to it. The ones we deal with straight away tend to be the less important ones. If we see a flashing light up ahead on a road or highway, we don’t slow down unless it’s sadly to rubberneck at what’s going on.

What warning light would you deal with immediately? If your mobile phone started flashing a red battery low warning light, would you take notice? If your XBOX or Play station started flashing a red light at you, would you panic and look at the instruction manual immediately? What about a red flashing light on your hot water system or shower, you would definitely look at that and take note. The thing is these things are not essential. We don’t need them to live or indeed survive. Yet a flashing warning light up ahead we may well ignore and someone’s life may be in danger.

In this modern age, we tend to live in a bit of a hermetically sealed bubble and be totally wrapped up in our own little worlds. What we do though is ignore the wider world and all of the issues and terrible things in it. Did you know that there is at least one emergency worker per month killed at the roadside due to carelessness and ignorance? People approach an accident where there are myriads of different warning light yet they don’t drop their speed and don’t pay attention to any emergency personnel that may be about.

A warning light serves a purpose and in any emergency situation. They warn us and also protect the people involved. Sadly, the statistics show that we tend to ignore the emergencies and stay cocooned in our vehicles seeing and hearing nothing. Many people would swear they did not see the warning light up ahead. Given that warning lights tend to either be flashing LED banks of light or single strobes it’s difficult to imagine how anyone could fail to see them. Please do take note of any lights you see whilst you drive. It could actually save someone’s life and save your self from being caught up in a serious accident.

A warning light should spell hazard, danger and beware, but all too often it is such a regular occurrence we do tend to take little notice of them. The next time you are driving pay a little extra care and slow when you see a flashing warning light ahead. Worse still is people often say they don’t see flashing lights when they are approaching from behind their vehicle, so don’t pull over or drop speed to let emergency vehicles pass. Because of this many states have introduced a ‘Move Over’ Law, which is designed to get road users to drop speed or pull into an adjacent lane to let emergency vehicles pass.

The ‘Move over’ law is also to help protect the emergency personnel attending an accident. It’s a sad indictment in today’s society that we need such a law. We should always take note of a warning light as they are there for a reason. Don’t risk the chance of an on the spot fine for not moving out of the way of emergency vehicles. Although a direct hit to your pocket may be just the thing to get you to take note of any warning light you see on the highway.
