No. 22 Iowa thumps Bradley 91-53
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP)—Jaime scarf Printy led five players in double figures with 21 points and No. 22 Iowa cruised past Bradley 91-53 Tuesday night in its home opener.
Kamille Wahlin added 17 points for the Hawkeyes (3-0), who improved to 5-0 against the Braves.
Iowa had little trouble disposing of Bradley (1-1), racing out to a 44-24 lead at halftime while holding the Braves to just 28 percent shooting. The Hawkeyes pushed their lead to 25 early in the second half and coasted the rest of the way.
Iowa’s Kachine Alexander had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Kelly Krei and Hannah Draxten each scored 12 points.
Raisa Taylor had 18 points but six turnovers for Bradley (1-1), which returns three starters from a team that finished tied for third in the Missouri Valley last season.
About the closest the Braves came to making a game of it came late in the first half, when they pulled within 37-24 with a quick 6-0 run. But Iowa coach Lisa Bluder called a timeout to calm the Hawkeyes down, and Wahlin sandwiched a pair of jumpers around Draxten’s 3-pointer to push Iowa’s lead to 20 at the break.
Krei opened the second half with a 3 and a layup to make it 49-24 with 18:32 left, and Bradley never got closer than 20 after that.
Expectations are high for the Hawkeyes this season. Iowa is ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since the 2000-01 season and has been picked to finish second in the Big Ten behind Ohio State, who uggs boot the Hawkeyes nearly beat in the league championship game last year.
Iowa had trouble its last time out, though, barely getting past Arkansas State 50-47 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Hawkeyes looked much better against the overmatched Braves, forcing 25 turnovers and holding them to 4-of-18 shooting from 3-point range.
Bradley will wrap up its week of playing Big Ten opponents by hosting Illinois on Friday night.
