Dismembering Lahui
Dismembering Lahui is the book written by Jon Osorio about the history of Hawaiian native people. The book determines the history of the native Hawaiians in the struggle of their sovereignty. The book investigates the political history of Hawaii from 1840 when the constitutional government became effective to Bayonet Constitution of 1887. The Hawaii was a monarchy when it became independent in 1893 after pro US forces made its annexation to USA.
It was when the White started to enter Hawaii for businesses. Hawaii had natives belong to Asian ethnicity. The interventions were started by Whites who came from USA, starting a new concept of racism. They started to own the businesses due to the resources that had and soon were trying to fully implement their dominance in every factor that was present. They started to enter into the high governmental posts that allowed them to leave native Hawaiians to serve under them. The political game was initiated by USA at that time hidden form the main screen. The Natives were then made to suffer from their own hands. The lands were bought by Whites again leaving Natives on the wrong foot. The dominance of White Americans was showing its shine in the later stages of 1880s when a struggle in the Hawaii was started due to these actions.
In history, this fight was defined as the revolution of the Hawaiian people who were trying to overthrow the Queen and the monarchy system, but it was the propaganda that was started by USA. The story is quite different where the Natives tried to fight for their sovereignty and monarchy but due to some internal clashes and rebellions the main motive of this fight was not achieved. In 1887, White Americans made Queen to sign on the document that was known as Bayonet Constitution of 1887. By surrendering by force, Queen gave many executive rights to Whites which made her designation very weak and by no way could have controlled this kingdom. After 1887, the Natives fought for their right of freedom but they never were able to accomplish that and in 1893 the monarchy was overthrown ending the tenure of Kingdom of Hawaii as a free country.
Keeping the view of the author in tact, the Natives are sometimes made responsible for these acts. History states that Queen was the first one who didn’t accept the Whites as the people of Hawaii. She always used the term, ‘My People” for Natives of Hawaii and created a factor of discrimination between the two commodities. Native Hawaiians were therefore always thought Whites as their enemy. Whites due to resources available to them, were easily made their way through to the top official places and held offices like cabinet ministers, legislators and judges but they were not able to get any respect from the Natives.
Author impressively defined the overall political changes that changed the course of history of Hawaii.
