Stress and the body
All living things experience some kind of stress in their lifetime. These kinds of stresses impact negatively or positively in their bodies but many a stress impact negatively. In this paper or essay there will be a definition of stress or the question of what is stress will be answered. Many causes of stress will be highlighted, the effects of the stress and the reaction of the body towards any kind of stress, the various treatment of stress and easier tactics employed to relieve stress whereby some practices like physical exercises may be the standard measures to take in order to combat stress.
As stress is related or associated with the reactions of the body and the effects caused in the body, and According to (Lovallo 1997), then the better and universal definition of stress may be, “a psychological or physiological response or reaction to events that upset the body’s biological balance”. There are two types of stress i.e. positive stress and negative stress. The positive stress is caused by joyful events like winning a sports title or Grammy Award which in turn gives one a push to fight on and the negative stress is caused by death lose of job. These are brought about by various events or issues in day to day life like death of a close friend or family member or lover, loss of a job, lack of food and even sickness in the family.
Life evolution or may major changes in life cause stress and these changes are referred to as stressors and these stressor are categorized into two types i.e. external stressors and internal stressors. These stressors are the main or major causes of stress. External stressors are further categorized into the physical environment which includes noise, too much confinement in the work place, etc, the social interaction whereby a person encounters aggressiveness, racial, gender discrimination, rudeness or and bullying from other members in the work place or at home, organizational stressors which include tough rules and regulations that must be adhered to and trying to meet deadlines that are too close with a lot of work remaining to be done. The daily events like changes and challenges in marriage. Lastly, major life events like commuting daily to work places with traffic jams which are daily occurrences that may cause lateness and fear of dismissal or suspension from work or duty and even misplaced tools of work may cause stress.
Internal stresses include; lifestyle choices, inferiority complex, personality traits and self mind traps. Lifestyle choices include taking of drinks containing caffeine coffee, lack sleep and overworking oneself or working under tight schedules. Inferiority complex can also be the same as negative self talk which in turn brings about pessimistic thinking and self –criticism which all cause stress. Personality traits which cause stress include perfections and workaholics(Cohen 1997).
