The Power of RSS – The Approach your Web Guy Forgot
SEO, SEO, everywhere SEO. Seems like people talk about nothing else now. It is close to scary seeing how “quiet” it was just 10-15 months ago. Today every single entity with a website seems to demand us SEO people (I use the term quite broadly as it includes all staff related in online marketing, from the SEO to the PPC all the way through to the Social Media, Web Content Copy Writers and Link Building Gurus as well as the gremlins that tweaks the code)
With this new “vivication” one would usurp that some type of knowledge or idea at least as regards the theory of promotion of services, ideas, products or just about anything really. I have grown accustomed to CEO and Large Corporation to not get the picture or be familiar with these things (Hey, if they did I would be out of a profession), but I do believe strongly that our “engineers” at least know this idea as well as what methods are handy to help promote a website. The “engineers” I refer to are Web Programmers, Web Developers and and Code Junkies.
What happened you ask? Well, long story short is that I have in 2010 come across a few formidable web programmers that had no clue about RSS (Really Simple Syndication) – Yes, it is true. These guys had no hint, no idea and even a frown or two when I tried to explain this to them.
You must be joking?
This sanctioned a research moment, something as effective, powerful and even viral enabling as RSS cannot simply be “unheard of”. or can it?
Clearly it can. After turning to our credible source of knowledge online (Google) I found that there was incredibly little information on how to make use of RSS outside of the blogging community. Most CMS (Content Management System) came with this gimmick built in or as an easily accessed addon, plugin or other name for modules that you can add to your website to give it more function and features or even assist with web mastering tasks like building photo galleries in just seconds, layout and article design or even as we are discussing now – Website Promotion!
My search was not in vain though, it took me quite some time, but I did after about an hour find out that there are ways for the non-CMS websites to use this very effective tool as well. I should add notwithstanding that I have not tried this software out myself, but from what I have read and can figure out on my own it seems to do the job and then some. There is a draw back as I can see for now and that is that this computer program has to be installed on a computer with internet connection and be constantly linked to your website. I know that there are some smart Web Developers out there that can probably do a Cron script that runs and performs exactly the same as this software. For those of you that do not know what a Cron is, it is a service that handles scheduled tasks, much like the automatic virus scan of your pc.
Static Website and How To Add RSS to The system
As I stated, most CMS at present has this feature attainable in some form, but if you have a webdesign enterprise building and maybe even overseeing your website for you then you will have to look in to alternate solutions. I advise that you use some form of software for this, unless your webdesign firm insists on writing this XML by hand.
The application software I found was FeedForAll, I have not tried it, but it does exactly what I have been talking about in this article – it builds an XML file for you, uploads it to your server and then handles all the updates you do to your website.
The FeedForAll computer program also handles other types of RSS, such as Podcasts that is good if that is the type of business you use your website for.
I have been looking around for scripts that run or handles this server side, but they are either too complex or too reliant on you using some form of certified, non custom CMS.
