Since the prices of fossil fuel based energy sources are sky rocketing and also becoming scarcer to find, there has been more interest in pursuing potential alternative energy solutions that can replace them. In addition to their cost, they are also damaging to the environment through the pollutants that are released in their production and use. Potential alternative energy solutions offer resources that do not pollute the environment and are also renewable in many cases, thus providing a lasting energy source that can be passed down through the ages and improved upon. Some of these potential alternative energy solutions have been used for some time but have not been very effective. New technology is making them more effective for use so that they can begin to replace traditional models of energy production.
Types
Solar energy has long been considered a potential alternative energy solution. The problem has been that the sun is not always shining and the energy that is produced fluctuates from day to day and hour to hour. Also, the solar panels are still large and unwieldy, thus needing a lot of open space in order to use solar energy for commercial use. However, using solar energy as a potential alternative energy solution in people’s homes is becoming more cost efficient to use. There are still solar panels that can be set up on the roof or in the yard, but there are also solar roofing tiles that look just like regular roofing tiles but produce energy that can power appliances. There are also solar water heaters and solar lighting units that can be used which also save on the power bill for the home.
Wind power is another potential alternative energy solution that is being explored. It is not very effective for individual use, but it is starting to be used commercially where there are open places in windy areas where the turbines can be set up in farms. This type of energy is also not consistent since the wind varies constantly, but the power generated is becoming more effective as the technology gets better.
Water has also been used as a potential alternative energy solution, both through the use of dams and also the use of the tides where the ebb and flow of the water moves the power generators. Water is a more consistent form of power since the water can be stored up behind dams and monitored to produce more or less power, and the tides are consistent as to when they some in and go out.
