Hawaii’s story by Hawaii’s Queen
This book is written by the queen of Hawaii herself after she was made to lose her throne as a result of the revolution that was in response to the Bayonet Constitution of 1887 which was signed by the king of Hawaii under the pressure from the Whites who emigrated from USA for doing business. This book basically describes all the facts according to the queen as she and her people suffered from hard time due to the White Americans.
According to Queen the Whites were able to enter into the big government positions due to the power and the resources they had and created an environment of dominance. The Whites have been able to do so in various parts of the world and now they were looking at Hawaii. Hawaii was affected by British in 1943 when Britain wanted Hawaii to work under its rule. But due to plea and other protests it wasn’t done. Hawaii then saw a large White community entering into Hawaii to work. At this time, she believes, White Americans were able to intervene at the highest level and started to take hold of the Natives who didn’t realize that they were being polished away by their rights. According to critics, queen was the first one who initiated these differences between the White and the Natives. They say that queen never accepted Whites as the citizens of Hawaii and she always used to call “My People” for the Native Hawaiians clearly providing discrimination between both the groups and this was the cause of the racism.
Queen says that the Native Hawaiians were forced to lay down on Whites when they forced King to sign the Bayonet Constitution of 1887 which gave America the right to enter Hawaii and plan a naval base at Pearl Harbor. Due to the sovereignty of Hawaiian Natives, they were not able to digest this equation and went against the King and the Whites to stop this act. Queen says that it was the biggest cheat game that America played in this situation which cost Hawaiian people their land. Critics at this time also said that it were the actions of queen that created so many differences between Whites and Natives that they came in front of each other to fight. Just before the Bayonet Constitution of 1887, fight was going out in the streets of Hawaii against the Whites. It is known as the start of the Hawaiian rebellion towards the cause to get freedom from the dominance of American Whites. Americans taking were able to know the situation and forced the king to sign the constitution.
This signing of constitution ignited the sentiments of Natives to go against Americans and the fight was started. This constitution also made the monarchy to give most of the rights to the persons in the governing body taking away opportunity to make executive decisions. That also changed the Lahui which was described as the Native institution which make Hawaiians to gain rights to vote and own the land.
