Strobe lights are vital equipment on a first responder vehicle
There can be nothing more visual than strobe lights as a warning sign on either the street or highway. We don’t ignore any flashing warning light in our home or even in our automobiles. We should never therefore ignore any flashing strobe lights we see.
Visual and audible warnings are crucial to us. They appear in our homes, our places of work, out on the street and even in our autos. If you had a flashing light on your dash you wouldn’t ignore it, you would check out what the problem was then try and rectify it. Likewise, if you see flashing strobe lights with an audible alarm in your place at work you are highly unlikely to ignore it. Many emergency vehicles will have some form of strobe lights and although it may be hard to believe, some people actually ignore that as a warning sign.
Anything flashing tends to signal danger or act as an alert. Flashing strobe lights are no different. Many emergency systems such as fire alarms or intruder alarms have visible strobe lights as part of the system. We need visual warnings as well as audible warnings. The main reason for the visible warning is to act in conjunction with audible warnings. Of course, if you were deaf you would not be aware of any audible warning, which is why both types of warning go hand in hand. Someone hard of hearing can’t ignore a strobe light flashing, it signifies something is wrong.
It is a sad fact that there are emergency responders killed every month on our roads. Many of these are already at the scene of an incident and have been killed at the emergency. It’s a sad indictment of us as drivers that we fail to see strobe lights or hear the wail of sirens. We do get caught up in our own little world in our automobiles and with music playing and the build of vehicles today, sometimes we won’t hear an audible warning. We really don’t have any excuse in not seeing a very visible warning of strobe lights or a bank of LED lights on vehicles.
Don’t become statistics; be aware of all that goes on around you. That applies to pedestrians as well as road users. If you see flashing strobe lights and hear the wail of any kind of siren, be alerted that someone is in need of assistance. Don’t get in the way of first responders, keep sidewalks clear and don’t rubberneck. If you see a flashing strobe or any flashing light up ahead, on the highway reduce your speed and approach the scene with caution. Be aware of the personnel there and be mindful of their safety.
We all may need the assistance of police, fire department or an emergency medical team at some point in our lives. How much safer would it be if we all did treat those scenes with respect, someone may be injured or worse, dying at the side of the road. You wouldn’t like to be in that position in the future, with people slowing to look at you being helped. Common courtesy seems to be lacking sometimes, so why not reintroduce it into your life, take note of the flashing strobe lights but move on from the scene. Show respect at emergency scenes. Please be cautious and offer respect to those in the immediate need.
