Job Boards: Then and Now
Do you ever wonder what job seekers did prior to the birth of job search sites? I’ve used job web sites more in my life than any other search method. It’s slightly difficult to even remember what life was like before job boards.
Nowadays, job web sites are used as the main search tool for job seekers. The process has evolved so much and is now so easy to use. Searching jobs has never been so easy.
They’ve even become so easy to navigate over the past few years. You can search job web sites by job category, location, key word, job title, salary, and more. You can narrow down your search as much as you’d like, or you can broaden it as well.
I’m still relatively young, so these job search tools have been around for almost as long as I’ve been of legal age to have a job. But even I remember as a young teenager having to network and pass along my paper resume to potential employers.
My first few jobs were obtained through word of mouth and just by knowing somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody who was hiring. And today, I wonder if that type of job search still exists. My guess is yes, but it’s less common.
Then I think about my first experience using job search sites, and they’ve come a long way since then. Just a decade ago, job boards were so simple and pretty much just appeared like a web version of classified ads.
Today, job web sites have become quite dynamic and resourceful. Not only can you search job openings, but you can also apply right there at your convenience.
Today, you can pretty much go through the entire hiring process solely through these online tools. From job search to interview to hiring, many of these processes can be done via the internet.
