Confetti is the name given to the chocolate that was served to guests attending an Italian wedding. This word was adopted by the English language where is stood for tiny bits of paper. Guests used these tiny bits of paper to bless the newly wed couple.
It is believed that Christian borrowed this idea or rather retained this concept from the old pagan beliefs. This belief is similar to the practice of showering the newly wedded couple with rice. Rose petals were used before the arrival of paper confetti. These rose petals were viewed as a connection between newly married couple and nature. This connection was made to ensure that the couple enjoyed a long and happy married life as well as had many children. Since paper confetti can be produced in large amounts, people started using them in large amounts. The street on which the church was located became very messy after a wedding. This led the church authorities to request the guests to refrain from using confetti.
To solve this problem biodegradable confetti was made. Since it was biodegradable they were easy to clean after a wedding. Thus biodegradable confetti enabled people to follow the traditional custom of blessing the newly wed couple with confetti. These biodegradable confetti included petals of flowers like lavender and rose. The only drawback of this kind of confetti was that they could not retain their color and fragrance for an extended period of time.
Thus it was necessary to find methods of preserving the confetti, so that they can be used on a later day. In this regard two methods were developed. The first method was to dry freeze them and the second method was to air dry them. Majority of the people preferred to air dry them as it was more economical.
