White Wine of the Month – Ideas on fantastic Wine
There is a standard misconception that an exceptional wine has to cost money. This is not the fact. As the saying goes “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder” similarly can be said for taste. Everyone is different and one person’s quality wine is another person’s dishwater, but there are ways to find a happy medium.
The first thing you need to do is obtain a wine you truly like. It doesn’t have to be expensive, in fact, you can find some very positive wines in the region of ?5 which are of same quality of those at ?10-?15 (and it’s always a good idea to keep an eye out for unique offers on wine so you can savor something you may not take a chance on if it was at its conventional price)
When you have found a wine you savor, read the label, it will tell you the grape, the flavours and the place in which the grapes were grown. Once you know this, you can start to look at related wines from that country or wines with a related flavour. Again, if there is a wine on offer, don’t be nervous to explore.
When you know the kinds of wine you care for you can then test which wines work best with what meals. The common rule of thumb is white meat, white wine, red meat, red wine; all the same you could be missing out. Try experimentation with light reds with your white meat food, and similarly try a stronger white with a red meat.
Not everything will be to everyone’s liking, but this is what makes testing wines so attractive. If a low-priced bottle of rose from Tesco is something you delight in then good for you, we know that out of this world wine hides in all price ranges, this is one point that remains true and that is the more you pay for wine, does not guarantee you that it will taste better.
The best recommendation we can give you, especially if you are fresh to the world of wine and still examining your way up through to finding that superb wine, is to begin in the lower end of the price range and making notes of what type of wine that appeals to you. Is it fruity wine with a hint of grape or maybe even an earthy wine with hints of cinnamon, oak or even sunny drenched grass? There are abundance of combinations to wine and all of them offer individual taste and even what kind of food they are suited for. It comes down to how much you dare experiment and remember this little thing when you try out wine – If you always do what you always done, then you will always get what you always gotten.
Take a chance every now and then and go against regular thinking, it will sometimes end in unmitigated failure, but every once in a while you will end up with strange things like “hot salty popcorns and Maltesers” a combination that sounds bizarre but is delicious beyond imagination. With wisdom in these experiments of course comes the ability to be prepared, so keep a few bottles you know will work tucked away in that aspiring wine cellar of yours – Just in case!
