US board approval Soyabean checkoff funding will pave your way easily
MCPU Polymer Engineering received approval from the United Soybean Board for Soybean Checkoff funding to study replacement of petrochemicals with soybean oil-based alternatives in tire fill formulations.
Soybean Checkoff funding comes from soybean farmers collectively investing a portion of their crop profits to fund research and promotion efforts, as directed by the United Soybean Board. The funding helps facilitate market growth and creation through research, marketing and commercialization programs. By building demand both at home and abroad, soybean checkoff dollars help ensure a strong and profitable future for U.S. soybean farmers.(1)
The study hopes to have an impact on the North American tire fill market which currently utilizes an estimated 45 million pounds of petroleum-based polyurethane chemicals annually. The global market of course offers a greater platform for future expansion. Tire fill is a liquid polyurethane system which replaces air when injected into a tire. As the mix cures, it produces a strong, dense polyurethane gel also known as an elastomer, which essentially ‘flat-proofs’ the tire. Tire fill is used in slow-speed industrial applications where a flat tire could result in costly downtime or severe safety consequences (i.e. fork-lifts, mining, construction, agricultural and military vehicles).
Where’s the connection between soybeans and tire fill? Since tire fill is made from petrochemical- based polyurethanes there is an opportunity to replace a portion of those chemicals with soy polyols. MCPU has successfully formulated rigid and flexible polyurethanes with soy alternatives, so why not tire fill elastomers as well? The United Soybean Board, the Soybean Checkoff program and MCPU Polymer Engineering hope to make tire fill one step greener by successful implementation of HoneyBee™ soy polyol technology. This patented new technology offers both economic and environmental benefits including sustainability, lower carbon footprint, reduced dependency on petroleum, less volatility of raw material costs; and it supports U.S. agricultural and soybean farming initiatives.
