“Jack Heuer has a heart for the classics,” notes president and CEO of LvMH Watch & Jewelry USA Daniel LaLonde. “But he’s working with us on all the TAG Heuer collections.” With the new models catching eyes this year, sales within the classics collection were up 50 percent by October, reportsLaLonde.

Heuer will also be a visible ambassador for the brand, adds LaLonde.“He will be visiting several of our events in 2004 and will be visiting various retailers in the United States.”

Monaco Sixty nine The launch this year of the Monaco Sixty Nine is a dual-sided tribute to Heuer history, though done with the future in mind.

This watch is primarily in formed by the classic designs of the original Monaco series that debuted in 1969. But, at the same time, the firm’s Microtimer, which in 1966 timed events to 1/1,000th of a second, is honored by the second side of the watch. (Bear in mind that while this side of the Monaco Sixty Nine utilizes many of the Microtimer features, this year TAG Heuer has also introduced a new, ultra hightech “concept” version and a stainless steel model of the Microtimer.) The Monaco Sixty Nine case flips from one side to the other, itself an innovative technique in that the two technologies are housed in the single case. The display on the traditional analog side of the watch is powered by a mechanical movement with small seconds subdial. Turn the case over, snap it into place and the functions of the four pushers become immediately apparent.

The digital display dial indicates chronograph timing with hour, date, alarm, second time zone, lap times and best lap time. But there’s more to the Monaco than its deep historical references and the latest digital technology. The bracelet has been custom-designed to retain the design references of the case. It’s made with seven rows of square, beveled links that are interwoven much like the brushed and polished look of the case. This combination of the his toric and the futuristic is to LaLonde a prime example of what TAG Heuer stands for. “This combines our brand values: prestige, performance and precision,” he observes. The addition of the steel bracelet this year to Monaco has generated additional demand for what was already a popular piece, adds LaLonde.

Carrera twin-time In 1964, Heuer launched the Carrera chronograph. In 1969, the watch was equipped with a Calibre 11 automatic movement with Microrotor, the famous Chronomatic, as well as a tachomet ric scale able to measure average speeds.

Now the Carrera is equipped with the automatic Calibre 7 movement and features distinct improvements. The polished steel case and ultra-legible dial has an even larger diameter. It is now fitted with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and its water resistance has been increased to 500 meters.
