Breitling Watch – The Pilot in Watch Area
We all know that the brand of Breitling has a pair of wings. Of course, that is not a way to make the brand look cute but a way to show that its replica watches have a special relationship with the pilots. With the rising of the air area in 1930, this brand began to offer the plane producers a kind of counters for planes. That’s the first time that Breitling watches got a relationship with the plane companies. And in1936, the England Royal Air Force even empowered Breitling as the brand to offer them professional pilot hand watches. And the upsurge of this series should be the extrusion of the watches equipped with slide rules. This watch was combining 3 essential tools for navigation: a replica watch, a chronograph and a sliderule. It was the navigation timer, also called The Navitimer.
This invention made it possible for pilots to have some simple, yet concise counters. In World War Two, British fighter planes were all equipped with time counters made by Breitling. Later in 1962, Breitling Navitimer even made a trip to space with an American astronaut, which means the Navitimer has already been able to stand the cruel situation such as super wave. That built up Breitling’s standing in the watch world and added some legendary things in its history.
As a typical series pilot watch, Breitling Navitimer has become the most famous and long-history series. And as the time flies, the design of this series did not change too much. It is always with Venus 178 movement, a very nice chronagraph movement with crown wheel. This series has hundreds of different watches, among which there are some special ones such as the generation 1, the Navitimers with the Vajoux 72 movement, the 806 with two planes and so on.
The generation 1 was produced with dial and arabics and with the famous AOPA. On the very first models, “Breitling” was only seen on the case back. The reference of this watch was 806 and remained unchanged until the introduction of a complete new generation in the 70’s. Talking about the generation 2 – the Navitimer Valjoux 72, its rarity has to be mentioned. For an unknown reason, this watch did not use the oral material of the Venus 178. As a result, even watch collectors did not know this watch at all. And as their top seller, this series has made a record of ten years’ success. Breitling also introduced a new bezel type: the old “rice bead” version was replaced with a brand new design.
