Compatibility with PS2 Games on the PS3
Many people are frustrated at the (lack of) backwards compatibility with their consoles. The Xbox 360 can’t play all Xbox titles (yet, although they are patching this as time goes on), and not every single PS3 has backwards compatibility with PS2 and even PSX titles. However, there are two main ways to be able to play PS2 games on your PS3, although each is imperfect, especially now more than ever (which will make sense in just a moment). Either through digital distribution or backwards compatibility, you can enjoy those old classics like Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid 2 again and again with PS2 games on your PS3.
The Benefits of Both
Firstly, true backwards compatibility (available only on the 20 Gb, 60 Gb, and original 80 Gb models) allows you to play the vast majority (but not quite all of the least popular titles) of your PSX and PS2 game library. For PS2 games on your PS3 with this method, just pop in your game disc from yesteryear, and you should be good to go. At most, you might have to update your PS3 via the Internet to have backwards compatibility for the game that you wish to play (there has been greater game support as time progressed). This is fast, easy, and free. Just go to options and update, and so long as you have a working Internet connection, you’ll be able to patch your PS3.
If you own a PS3 without backwards compatibility (the 40 Gb and new 80 Gb and 160 Gb models), then your only other options are to have a PS2 on hand or to purchase the games in Sony’s online store. You can then download those games directly to your hard drive (you can also get other media and game demos in the store, making it a useful place to check out from time to time anyway). The biggest downside is that the game selection is actually quite tiny still, and while more and more games will be added as the months and years crawl on, this is not as effective for playing PS2 games on your PS3.
Anyway you go about it, it’s always a ton of fun (even if just for nostalgia) to go back and relive some of those great gaming moments that don’t come around nearly often enough. Playing PS2 games on your PS3 can be confusing at first, and you might not quite be able to, but you can always go back and pick up a used PS2 for all of $30 if all other options fail.
