Choosing the Right Portable Oxygen Systems
Choosing the Right Portable Oxygen Systems
Options in portable oxygen systems mean greater freedom of movement for those who are dependent on an external oxygen supply. These systems are becoming more user-friendly and can provide additional oxygen for short as well as long periods of time. Newer models are easier to place in cars, and those that can be carried allow the patient to get out more and with less stress.
Types of Portable Oxygen Systems
Portable oxygen systems are not necessarily all designed to be carried; but should at the very least be easy to move. There are basically three types of portable oxygen systems: compressed oxygen, oxygen concentrators, and liquid oxygen systems. Some patients choose to use more than one type of system to meet their needs. The duration of oxygen supply in systems that use cylinders or tanks depends on their size and oxygen flow, while for concentrator systems this depends on the power source.
Compressed oxygen systems incorporate portable cylinders, which must be replaced when empty. These aluminum cylinders are available in various sizes with varying combinations of diameter, height and oxygen capacity. Newer composite cylinders allow for greater oxygen capacity in smaller sized cylinders, thereby providing longer duration use with a lightweight option. If you are unable to carry a cylinder, consider a rolling backpack over a cart. Carts are top heavy and can be dangerous. Rolling backpacks weigh less and have a lower center of gravity. You will want to make sure that your portable oxygen system can be enclosed, however, prior to investing in a rolling backpack.
Portable Oxygen concentrators provide a continuous delivery of oxygen, which is not stored in a tank or in any other manner. This type of portable oxygen system extracts oxygen from surrounding air and provides more freedom, and the ability to enjoy a better lifestyle. They are also very reliable and are a low maintenance option, albeit at a higher price. Some models can be battery operated. An additional important benefit of portable oxygen concentrators is that many have been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration for air travel.
Liquid oxygen systems consist of a large main tank or storage reservoir unit that remains in a permanent location, along with one or more portable units for use outside of your home. These portable units can be refilled from the large tank as needed. Because liquid oxygen will evaporate if not used frequently, the portable units should only be filled when needed.
