Backpacker Travel Information

If you are planning to backpack around Europe, you are not alone. Thousands have done it before you and thousands will do it after you. However, there are still countless things that you need to think of before you embark on your adventure.

Finances

It is important to be financially sound while participating in backpacker travel around Europe. You need to have the money to purchase food and things that you need, but you do not want to carry all of your money on you in case you are robbed. One way to get around this is to map out your journey and make note of where there will be money transfer stations like a Western Union. It may seem to be against the backpacker travel spirit, but it will work. Tell someone that you can trust what dates you will be in what major city and have them wire a certain amount of money to you at a Western Union in that city. That way you will have enough to get by until you reach your next major city.

However, you might be planning on taking a backpacker travel vacation that is way out of the ordinary. Maybe you plan on taking no money at all and roughing it. If this is the case, then make sure that you keep a little bit of fallback money in your shoe or in another secure place. You can do day labor to make money for food and such, but keep that emergency fund for just that-emergencies.

Safety

Safety is a high concern for backpacker travel. You want to spend the time roughing it, but you are also concerned about your things and your general wellbeing. There are a few things to note here. First, you are safer sleeping in the countryside under the stars than sleeping in a hostel with half a dozen strangers. Second, locals are much more likely to accept a backpacker traveler than someone driving up to their tiny town or village in a hot rod. If you are nice to the locals, they will most likely help you out in the best ways that they can.

Other Important Information

There are a few things you should pack for your backpack travel that you might not even think of. First, pack baby wipes. These work in a pinch if you cannot get to a shower (which you definitely will not be able to do every day while backpacking through Europe!). Second, pack plenty of maps. These will help you if you get lost. Third and finally, pack an extra pair of sneakers. They may seem bulky in your backpack, but you do not want to be shoeless while backpacking!
