Light bars – illuminating our emergency response vehicles to keep them safe.
Light bars sounds almost like something from a Star Wars movie. They aren’t science fiction but there is science in them. Light bars today normally contain LED lights, what is LED? LED is short for light emitting diode and that does sound faintly science fiction.
LED Light bars have been around some time. But the advances in the manufacture of the units today mean they are far more reliable and robust. The units that fit on the exterior of a vehicle are fully encapsulated to protect from moisture getting in and therefore corroding any metal parts. The units for emergency vehicles need to be easy to use and offer several different lighting flash patterns. Police vehicles for example now often need an array of lighting and there are tiered Light bars that provide take down lights, alley lights and traffic advisors.
It may sound dramatic but simple Light bars can be lifesavers. Imagine an accident on the highway on a dark, windy and rainy night. If the emergency response vehicles didn’t have any form of lighting, it would make your approach to the accident very dangerous. Light bars also are used to inform of a vehicles approach along with the siren. Stationary vehicles pose a significant risk to other road users so the Light bars also provide hazard warning when the vehicle has stopped.
A sad fact is that on our highways there are emergency responders killed or injured in quite large numbers. Many of the deaths and injuries happen whilst they are responding to emergencies and assisting at the scene. Drivers claim they did not see them and were not aware of a situation up ahead. Light bars illuminate scenes and accidents and act as a warning that there is a situation up ahead. Unfortunately, we are so wrapped up in our vehicles with music or the radio playing we often pay little attention to what is on the roads.
We really need to take more care and attention whilst we are on the roads to avoid injuring emergency personnel. Light bars are on vehicles for a reason and if you see a flashing light in your rear view mirror or up ahead on the highway, you need to be aware that a situation has occurred that needs their attention. Don’t become involved in a further accident yourself through lack of due care and attention to your driving. Be aware and alert at all times and you won’t become a statistic yourself.
Light bars whether they are flashing or being used as a traffic advisor need to be something we recognize and pay attention to. Ignoring any Light bars we see is a recipe for disaster and it is something that shouldn’t happen. Don’t have too many distractions whilst you are driving. Keep your eyes on the road and check your rear view mirror regularly. Light bars illuminate our emergency response vehicles and they should keep the responders themselves safe on our highways. Always slow down if you see flashing lights behind or up ahead of you, don’t let another emergency responder die on our roads.
