Lightbars keeping our first responders safe on our roads

Lightbars come in all sizes, profiles, flash patterns and colors. All first response vehicles will have some form of Lightbars on or in them. Lightbars are mostly made up of LED light units and these are popular for several reasons.

There is no doubt that Lightbars can save lives. Without the highly visible warning sign emergency vehicles must have, we would be at risk and the first responders themselves would be at risk. We need to see emergency vehicles and they need to be seen in order to get to where they need to be quickly and safely. Most emergency vehicles will have at least one lightbar, but many will have exterior and internal Lightbars on the vehicle. The more highly visible a vehicle is, the less likely it is to be hit by another vehicle.

So why are LED Lightbars now the most common type? There are several reasons why most emergency vehicles will have LED Lightbars. Primarily LED lights are extremely energy efficient. There is little drain on battery power when LED lighting is used even if it is on constantly for lengthy periods. Many of the units are very well constructed and are virtually maintenance free. In short, LED Lightbars are very cost efficient and could very well save you money in the long run. The LED’s have no filaments to burn out and the heat produced by LED is very low.

The LED Lightbars come in various different sizes so can be fitted to any vehicle regardless of its size. The modern Lightbars have various flash patterns and they can be changed with the flick of a switch, which is ideal for a first responder. Lightbars can be fitted inside a vehicle and there are specific units for dash or rear mounting. Lightbars can be permanently fixed to a vehicle or they can be made more temporary. The lightbar units are normally fully encapsulated so are reliable in all weather conditions and water will not get into the unit and cause corrosion.

Lightbars are more commonly associated with police; fire service and medical vehicles but the military are now fitting them to their vehicles. As the Lightbars come in various different color ways there is a unit to suit all services. The Lightbars are more sophisticated these days and come in a variety of different types, some are tiered and contain take down lights, alley lights and traffic advisors in one single unit. Ease of use and superior brightness are essential when the unit is on an emergency vehicle. Many suppliers are now using Generation 3 LED bulbs, which have extremely high light output.

There are many online retailers offering Lightbars for sale, but do choose yours carefully. Some units sold are imports and are of poor quality. You need reliability and longevity from your Lightbars, as they are costly to buy. Some retailers make the Lightbars themselves and work closely with the police and military to come up with Lightbars specific to their needs. Do a little research before you part with any cash for your vehicles lightbar. Lightbars are a vital aspect in maintaining the safety of our first responders whilst they are saving lives.
