One thing that all emergency or first responder vehicles have in common is an array of warning systems. We often hear an emergency vehicle before we see it, but there will be a flashing warning light somewhere on the vehicle. The main warning light on a police car would likely be a light bar atop the vehicle. If you see a flashing warning light in your rear view mirror, you would do well to slow down and if possible move to another lane. If an emergency vehicle is speeding towards an incident or accident then they need clear space on the road.

Some people claim they failed to see a warning light on an emergency vehicle and subsequently don’t allow the vehicles to pass. Due to this lack of attention by drivers there has been the introduction of some form of ‘Move Over’ law in most states. This would give police officers the powers to give you an on the spot fine if you fail to let an emergency vehicle pass. Some of the fines that can be imposed are quite hefty. If you end up with a fine in such a case then I’d like to bet you wouldn’t ignore any warning light you see in future.

Any stationary vehicle is a hazard to other road users. A warning light informs drivers that there is a problem up ahead. Many of us have some form of hazard warning light in our vehicles that we can use in case of breakdown. The benefit of keeping such a light in your vehicle is you not only warn others you have a problem, you can flag down assistance and keep yourself safe. A stationary vehicle on a dark highway at night is almost impossible to see unless there is some form of hazard warning light flashing.

Don’t ignore any warning light you see either up ahead or in your rear view mirror. Not only could you save yourself a fine, you help keep emergency response personnel safe. Any warning light means trouble of one kind or another and we would do well to stay alert and aware whilst driving. Keep distractions in your vehicle to a minimum and concentrate, you could help save someone’s life. Don’t let a warning light get you into trouble, always be extra aware if you see one at any time.
