What You Need to Get Started With Spiral Binding
There are a number of binding methods available and one of the most popular is spiral or color coil binding. There are a number of things you need to get started with this great document finishing method such as crimpers, covers, and so on. Check out the list below to learn about everything you need.
1.) Color coils. Obviously, if you’re interested in coil binding, you’re going to need coils. The great thing about these supplies is that they’re available in over 60 different colors including standard hues such as black, blue, and red, as well as more flamboyant ones such as neon pink and bright green. Since there are so many different colors available, you’ll definitely find one that’s right for your document. Also, coils are available in many thicknesses ranging from 6 to 50 millimeters. You’ll be able to bind documents containing up to 440 pages with these supplies, so your work can be just about as long or short as you want.
2.) Coil crimpers. One thing you absolutely must have to bind with coils is a pair of crimpers. You need them to fold in the tails of the spine so that the coil won’t wind its way out of your document. If that happens, you have to re-bind your work which is annoying and time-consuming. Crimpers look like a pair of pliers and they’re pretty easy to use. Plus, it only takes a few seconds to finish the job. If you produce a lot of books on a regular basis, you may want to look into getting a electric crimper so you don’t have to take care of all your documents manually.
3.) Covers and pre-punched paper. You’re going to need paper and covers for your documents. Pre-punched paper is very convenient because it eliminates the need for you to punch your documents yourself. This type of paper is available in different colors, weights, and sizes, and using it will definitely help you save some time. As far as covers go, these supplies will give your work the finishing touch it needs. There are a lot of different covers available from plain card stock to transparent plastic, so finding the right one for your work will be easy.
4.) A binding machine. Finally, you should get a coil binding machine so you can quickly and easily put your books together. These devices are available from a number of great manufacturers including GBC, Renz, Akiles, and Rhin-O-Tuff. Machines are available at every price point and most of them have a punch built right in so you don’t need to purchase yet another piece of equipment. Make sure you get a machine that’s durably constructed and has a good warranty so you can get a lot of use out of it.
Spiral/color coil binding is a terrific way to put together your documents and it’s easy to do when you have everything you need. Be sure to take this list with you when you go shopping so you can get everything you need. Happy binding!
