Classic Christmas
Red, green and gold are the colours we always turn to at Christmas, and together they can instantly bring Christmas cheer into any home. It’s simple to create the perfect look for the festive season, whether you want a traditional look or one that’s more modern, using only two of the colours.
The first thing that people usually see when they walk through the door of your home is the staircase, so this is an important place to start. You can make a statement with a garland in appropriate colours wrapped around the bannisters, and even add some fairy lights to the piece too. This alone will completely transform the hallway with minimal effort.
Small window ornaments like glass or coloured snowflakes can be used to subtly decorate the outside of your home as well as the inside.
Christmas motifs such as holly leaves and stars can be made from fabrics and coloured paper and arranged throughout the home, and these always go down well with children too.
When it comes to decorating the tree, perhaps the most important feature in any home at Christmas, remember that sometimes less is more. Try and coordinate it with the rest of the colour scheme too so that it goes with the decor. And make sure it’s the right size – a tree that is too large will simply look overbearing.
Hang your stockings in style on Christmas Eve from a mantlepiece feature created from pine, silver or gold twigs decorated with lights. This feature was typical of a Victorian Christmas, so it’s a great way to add a touch of traditional Christmas cheer to the living room.
It’s likely that your sofa is the focal point of your living room, so it makes sense to decorate the furniture too in order to include it in the Christmas festivities. This can be done simply with some statement cushions in Christmas colours and in a heavy fabric, which will straight away integrate your sofa with its surroundings. If your sofa is in a colour that won’t match, however, you can always cover it in a cream throw first.
A tip here is to use a lighter material in the same colour as the sofa cushions, to cover side or coffee tables. Again, this will give your furniture a Christmas lift, transforming the room.
When it comes to festive lighting, candles are undoubtedly the way to go. Don’t be afraid to experiment with rich coloured candles, especially with tall pillar candles which will sit well on dining tables and windowsills. For a more traditional and elegant look, go or some tall candlestick holders which will instantly transform a room. Alternatively, gold lanterns and incense sticks will looks equally good.
