Emergency police situations happen every day

Whatever the situation, whatever time of day or night our emergency police services are on hand. Whether it’s a domestic situation, an incident on the street or an accident on the highway the emergency police will be on hand to help.

When we think of the police, we tend to think of a speeding police vehicle, lights ablaze and siren screaming. However, that is just one aspect of police work. Much of the work the emergency police do is to keep us safe on our streets. They do have other duties and don’t always deal with emergency police situations. An officer typically deals with all kinds of things from attending Neighborhood Watch meetings to apprehending suspects. Police patrol in vehicles, on bicycles and on foot and no two days are the same for a police officer.

A friendly police officer on the street is a welcome sight and their general interaction with us, the public is a good reassurance that they are there and working on our behalf. Of course, there are emergency police situations they have to deal with and at those times; they are also a welcome sight. Police officers are sworn to serve and protect and they take their duties very seriously. Whilst we may not need emergency police help ourselves, someone somewhere does and the police will respond to their needs.

In general, we do tend to think of only emergency police situations but the duties they perform are many and varied. You would be surprised at some of the things they have to do. Did you know that some police officers regularly carry out community outreach work, or take part in community meetings? In any given day, officers can be doing the mundane such as report writing to the higher octane chasing down of a felon. No two days in their job are the same, they can have a peaceful day on patrol or they can be involved in a number of emergency police situations.

I think many people under value and undermine our police. They are criticized and derided on a daily basis. Police work under immense pressure and their job especially in emergency police situations is extremely dangerous. Many people that consider joining the police don’t even make it through the intensive, rigorous training they have to go through. Quite often, people don’t make the grade and that is a testament to how well trained our police are. The duties carried out by officers from dealing with emergency police situations to giving directions to members of the public are all carried out with professionalism and to a high standard.

The next time you see a police officer on foot, stop for a moment and give some thought to what they may have to deal with during their shift. Report writing, assisting citizens, directing traffic, running down felons and dealing with emergency police situations and accidents are some of the things they would have to do on their shift. Maybe approach an officer and just thank them for doing the job they do. We would be in a grave situation if there weren’t people out there prepared to protect and serve us so they deserve our support and thanks.
