Want to stand out at a holiday party this year?

Want to stand out at a holiday party this year? If money is no object, don a “video gown” from CuteCircuit. This $20,000 dress has motion omega watchsensors that make its embroidery glow brighter when you’re moving around fast and dim when you’re standing still. Or slip on a pair of Jimmy Choo Zappa sandals. This $2,495 black patent leather and suede shoe houses a battery that lights up its platform sole. Celebrities like Fergie are fans of the Zappa。

Indeed, technology is infusing every part of our lives, including fashion. Myriad technologies are combining with classic designs to create dynamic “smart fashion” statements that double as unique luxury items。

And demand for smart fashion is building as celebrities wear them on the red carpet. Rihanna wore a Mortiz Waldemeyer laser dress on her concert tour, and Katy Perry slipped into a CuteCircut LED dress to the MET Costume Institute Gala in New York City this year。

New designers are increasingly incorporating technology in their creations as well. Project Runway winner Diana Eng, for instance, has designed two tech-inspired dresses: Her $20,000 bio-electro-luminescent dress has LED lights that respond to movement, and her $15,000 inflatable dress changes shape as you walk。

Want to stay connected and look fabulous? Jewelry maker Novero has Bluetooth-enabled necklaces. Novero’s Victoria Pearl Bluetooth necklace line is relatively affordable at $250 to $350 per piece, but the premier-edition pearl, diamond and gold necklaces go for Tag Heuer watches upwards of $100,000. Novero grew out of the former wireless accessory division at mobile handset maker Nokia 。

Glasses are going high-tech too. Gucci recently debuted ultra-fashionable 3-D aviators. At $225, you’ll look great at the movies. Oakley also has a pair of 3-D glasses for $150. Gucci, though, has the best style。

Watches are getting techier as well. Breguet has designed a watch for Swatch that holds two tourbillons in a platinum case detailed with baguette-cut diamonds. It contains more than 570 parts and has three patents to protect its technology. At $755,000, this watch is the ultimate billionaire’s timepiece。

While demand for smart fashion is small, the designs could influence more moderately priced products in stores. Fashion is an industry that looks to the past, and technology is an industry that looks to the future. The outcome of this new hybrid is uncertain, but definitely worth watching。
