Movie Making Tips- Telling The Story
No degree of special effects in the world can make a film worth viewing when the story is dull. I cannot stress this enough. You MUST have a story worth telling.
Let me ask you a question. Let’s say you visited someone’s house and he started telling you all about his day at the store. He began it something similar to this.
“I went along to my local ShopRite to buy some groceries. First, I walked down the produce lane and bought a handful of apples and a melon. Next, I went to the bakery section and got a loaf of brown bread.”
And this went on and on and on about his entire shopping encounter. You’d probably be bored to tears? Would you really want to listen to his entire shopping experience? If you went to watch a film and the movie itself was JUST like this, wouldn’t you get up and walk out?
Okay, now take the same storyline, going shopping, but add a little twist to it that makes the story worth telling. Suppose the person started the story in this way.
“Did I ever inform you of the time when I popped out to the supermarket to buy a loaf of bread and came home a multi millionaire?”
Do you not feel that you’d be interested enough to at least wish to uncover how this individual visits the shop to buy bread and comes home super rich? I know I’d want to find out every last detail, particularly if they are nice and juicy.
Okay, so now, we might have a tale really worth revealing. That doesn’t necessarily mean we can’t mess up the telling of the account itself, but at least we’ve got something to begin with that has a lot of potential.
It’s essential to have something to share that might get the viewer interested or there’s no reason for telling it. The thing is, there are almost no stories which can’t be made exciting with a pinch of thought and creativity.
What generally happens any time you think of your concept is you imagine it through your own viewpoint. To you, the idea might be brilliant and engaging. This generally is the situation however when it comes to writing the script just be sure you are getting that message over to the viewers. The ultimate way to do this is to get some reviews from good friends.
The real art to creating an awesome story is to make sure that what you may imagine in your own imagination also comes across in the mind of the person watching the movie. Once you’ve got that nailed, then you’ll be certain to capture the same interest in the minds of others. Just remember, you’re the one that created the idea therefore you imagine it for what it is, for other people, the actual meaning of each scene may not be as apparent.
