Diversity In The Workplace
When we think of diversity in the work place we think of a very complex issue that is concerned with the individuals in the work place. The employees are very different in terms of gender, lifestyle, culture, race, ethical background among other factors. This make the human resource management in the organization have difficulties in trying to integrate the differences among the employees (Sadri, 2002). That is why diversity management in the work place is an important factor in human resource management. While traditionally, the issue of equality and non discriminatory policies were highly valued in the learning of the organization, the modern world requires that there should be diversity management for the successful learning of any organization (Friday and Friday 2003).
What every organization is faced with is how to incorporate the diversity management and come up with approaches that will help them to achieve the organization goal. In the modern days, organizations are facing culture diversity hence calling for a more organized diversity management. In some cases, this culture diversity creates a lot of problem and therefore it is necessary that an organization tries its level best to improve on the diversity management. This is because it is one of the key factors to the success of any organization (Sadri, 2002).
This paper is critically looking at diversity in general and it tries to analyze what diversity is and how it is can be managed. The paper further is concerned about the impact of culture diversity in the organization. It seeks to answer the question whether there is need for culture flexibility in ensuring the smooth running of the organization. The need for a culture change is also well described in this research paper. It also looks at the approaches that are taken in order to implement diversity policies in the organization and it explains the process of implementing this policies. In addition, this paper offers a critic on the adverse effect of using the defensive approach in trying to achieve culture diversity.
What is diversity?
Work place diversity generally concerns how people in the organization are different. It is a broad issue that does not include those issues broadly defined by the legal issues in equal opportunities and actions taken on discriminatory. In it broad definition it is concern with the people welfare within the work place that influences identity and perspective of an organization (Patricia 1996). This may include issues like geographical location, profession and education of the individuals in the organization. Diversity generally is a concept that includes everyone in the organization. In general the diversity scheme in an organization is implemented to come up with programs that are non discrimination and having an organization culture that will make a difference in the work place.
