Infectious Mononucleosis Signs and Symptoms

The widespread transmittable disease that is colloquially called “kissing disease” due to its oral distribution is more commonly known in the medical community as infectious mononucleosis; this disease was first diagnosed in 1889 by Emil Pfeiffer. This contagious disease is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus and researches have shown that almost 90% of the adults have been exposed to this kind of disease through out their lifetime.

Mononucleosis Signs and Symptoms

Infectious mononucleosis which as found to have no characterized flu-like symptoms in children shows fever, sore throat and fatigue that could lead to weight loss in adolescent and to some young adults. Often the fever is accompanied by enlargements of the lymph nodes – hence, persons with infectious mononucleosis have ten typical lumps found at the location of these nodes. Since the mononucleosis signs and symptoms of infectious are also common in other signs for other sorts of viral infections, only diagnostic tests will confirm the present of the infection.

Adults with infectious mononucleosis seldom develop lymphadenopathy or sore throat, but instead what doctors commonly find are liver enlargements (hepatomegaly) and complications like jaundice – which are observed by skin discolorations. In connection with that, mononucleosis signs can also be the development of hepatitis where inflammatory cells are present in the liver.

This certain type of infection often comes with a rare mononucleosis sign and what doctors referred to as cold agglutinin disease; this is an autoimmune disease where there is an increased in the abnormal circulating antibodies that goes against the body’s normal read blood cells and destroys them, which results to autoimmune hemolytic anemia.

Common Treatments of Infectious Mononucleosis

For the drug therapy of infectious mononucleosis, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used in order to reduce pain and fever. Although corticosteroids are not advisable for most patients, they are often given in cases where there are airway passage obstructions.

Just like most infections, mononucleosis signs and symptoms or even the disease itself may not bedeadly when properly diagnosed and treated with the right kind of medication and since this infection is self-limiting the only supportive and symptomatic treatments are available fro mononucleosis. But unlike other common viral infection, antibiotics may not work against the virus because these drugs may cause non-allergic rashes. In cases where, infectious mononucleosis is accompanied by sore throat caused by streptococcus bacteria, then penicillin is administered to the patients.

Rest is highly recommended while in the acute stage of infectious mononucleosis and in fact, in most cases heavy activities are not allowed to lessen the possibility of any splenic rupture until further complications are resolved.
