Insight into Chronic Mononucleosis

Mono is one of the prevalent health problems among 95% of Americans today. Popularly called as the ‘kissing disease’, this is predominant among teens and young adults. The common symptoms of mono that constitute fatigue, slight fever and appetite loss, though dormant, needs to be treated on time. If left untreated, these dormant symptoms though not serious, can further lead to the complication of chronic mononucleosis.
What is Chronic Mononucleosis?
When the usual dormant symptoms of the common form of mono prolongs for more than 6 months, then it might lead to further symptoms like extended elevation of body temperature associated with swollen lymph nodes, debilitation and prolonged sore throat problems. These symptoms insinuate the contraction of the chronic form of mono, chronic mononucleosis.
A person suffer suffering from chronic mononucleosis suffers from innumerous bouts of fatigue and loss of appetite within a period of around 6 months. Often called as the chronic active EBV infection, the development of mono to chronic mononucleosis is rare. Chronic mononucleosis is also called as recurrent mono.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of chronic mononucleosis is usually via a blood test or a tissue biopsy. These testes when done to understand the levels of EBV within the human system can help in diagnosing the existence of this disease with ease.
Treatment Options
A couple of effective and brawny treatment options for this disease constitute complete bed rest and unlimited fluid intake.
When you take bed rest, ensure that you are distracted. Don’t keep thinking about the contraction of this disease for that would aggravate the dormant symptoms that you have. Soothe your mind by listening to pleasant music and attending yoga classes. Try to keep yourself busy for this would help you in keeping up the good quality of life that you had been having all this while.
Antibiotics are usually prescribed for the associated throat problems. Corticosteroids like prednisone are usually given to patients to assuage them from their throat infection. Antibiotics are prescribed by doctors only when chronic mononucleosis is visible with other bacterial infections.
Since this is a viral disease, antibiotics have proven to be ineffective in treating this infectious disease.
Prevalence
The disease is predominantly seen in teens and very young adults. By the time an individual attains the age of 35, he develops immunity and is able to fight back the infection of EBV with ease.
Further Complications
Chronic mononucleosis can further pave way to jaundice, inflammation in spleen and hepatitis though this is very rare.
