A Strobe Light unit is a piece of history in the modern world

A Strobe light is something that has been around for some time. Originally used in photography, they have been applied to many different uses over the years, not least as part of our emergency responder’s vehicles as warning lights.

We rarely say ‘Oh I have seen a stroboscopic light today’ and for good reason. Most people wouldn’t know what we were talking about! That term is the true name of the light we know as Strobe light today. The strobe light has many applications and we often see them in clubs as part of the lighting effects on the dance floor. A strobe light is basically any light that can give regular flashes of light. The word strobe is derived from the Greek word strobos, which translates to ‘act of whirling’ so there you have your Greek lesson for today!

Strobe light units are mainly thought of in conjunction with sirens and other lightbars on vehicles. This doubling up of lighting on an emergency vehicle is wise. It makes them more visible in many more different weather or lighting conditions. As the British would say ‘It’s a belt and braces job’, which means you take not chances of your trousers falling down with both of them in place! Well, although there is no trouser falling down to do with emergency vehicles it does give them added protection and safety.

A Strobe light in general replaced the costly and unreliable halogen lighting on emergency vehicles. LED lighting is now the most popular form of light on any vehicle today so there are LED strobe light units that can be fitted to vehicles, giving the benefit of the highly effective strobe with the high visibility and reliability of the LED light. If you live in an area of forest or out of the way, the emergency vehicles need the additional lighting so they are seen on the roads, which are often isolated and dangerous.

Generally a strobe light flash is around 200 microseconds. Now that is slow, but they can be programmed to flash at a slower or faster rate, making them more versatile as emergency lighting. A strobe light on continuous mode can give a very high intensity light that is difficult to ignore. A Strobe light unit provides an excellent type of hazard warning, especially for stationary vehicles. Where you will see a LED lightbar with traffic advisors, take down lights and alley lights; these are not particularly effective when the vehicle is stationary at the roadside on open highway.

The high visibility and instantly recognizable strobe light has come on some way since its invention. Whilst often-new advances in technology render things obsolete or out of date the same fate has not befallen the strobe light. It is proof of the effectiveness of strobe lights that we still use them in great number today. Okay, no longer are they the only method of hazard or emergency warning a first response vehicle has, they still have relevance and place in today’s world.
