Decals, Dogs, And My Roseville Hotel Stay
While I was enjoying my stay at a Roseville hotel, my dear friend, whom I was visiting nearly had his home burglarized. Thankfully, he managed to scare the burglar away and the San Mateo police were quickly on the scene. Still, he and his family were shaken and when I visited them the following night, it was hard to cut through the lingering tension. So, I decided to offer some advice, which I laid out for you to read as well.
Think of this as preventative advertising. Statistically, homes that display these badges in their windows experience fewer break-ins. As they have a dog on premises, I suggested they place a sign in the front and back windows that the home is guarded by a dog. Moreover, as they were discussing getting an alarm system, I told them if they did opt for one that they should display the brand of the alarm on the window as well.
A sign warning of an attack dog could be enough to make burglars scatter when Goldie saunters into the kitchen. Granted, my friend’s dog, Goldie, is a sweet-hearted Lab who didn’t even flinch when the burglar was trying to pry open the back door. It’s a kind of psychological warfare tactic, and one that doesn’t even need a willing or vicious canine participant.
Now, as I said, I suggested the security badges be displayed in windows that might be appealing to burglars. This means windows on the side and back of the house — and, of course, on the back door itself. These are the most vulnerable entry points and need to have the messaging lace directly on them. Also be sure to place a decal or badge on your garage door as well.
While an alarm system and a vicious dog can greatly reduce your chances of being broke into, even featuring a decal or warning sign can be enough. When you’re dealing with the criminal element, you have to remember they are a scared and fearful lot. They want to get in, not deal with a lot of noise and get out. Nothing is worse than a loud, yapping dog and an alarm system going off at maximum volume.
