Meditation for stress relief.

Five Tips for a Better Meditation Session
Meditation has many benefits: relaxation, stress elimination, and inner peace. While there are a lot of ideas about meditation out there, it doesn’t have to just be sitting in a corner staring at a blank wall. It is not necessarily a religious undertaking. Meditation has been part of many different cultures, and its effects on the mind will ensure it continues to be used to balance the mind and spirit. Not everyone has access to a meditation mentor, so here are a few tips to start your practice.

Choose a Place
Look around the house, or outside if you prefer and have a suitable spot, for a calm, quiet place. This should be somewhere distanced from distractions like the telephone, computer, or other electronic equipment. Clutter must be cleared away. Keep away from others in the house who might disrupt you. A window may connect you to the outside if you can find one that gives a view of a natural vista. Experiment with a mix of music, lighting, wall space and plant life to find what makes you most receptive.

Decide on a Position
You don’t have to sit in a yoga lotus pose to meditate. The most important thing to remember is to be able to hold the position throughout your session. Your spine needs to be straight. Breathe through your nose and use your stomach to deepen the breath. Eyes may be open or closed. A good hand position for beginners is to keep them flat and open with your palms up. Seated positions are the most common, but you may also choose to stand or lie down.

Timing is Everything
Beginners may find it easier to start with a shorter time, like five to fifteen minutes instead of an hour. The cycles of the day include peak times at midnight and noon, as well as at sunrise and sunset. The peak times have been identified by ancient gurus of yoga to be the times of the highest ambition, and the off-peak times are the best for the calming of the mind. However, it’s best to do it when you have time instead of trying to reschedule the entire day.

Wear Comfortable Clothing
Active wear puts the mind in a state ready to work out or otherwise spend energy. Meditation should be done with something loose and comfortable. A robe works best, but other attire may also suit the purpose. If you feel constricted when you begin, it will distract you from the session.

Make a New Habit
It takes thirty days to create a new habit. Commit to a month’s worth of meditation and see where it leads you. Once you establish a new routine, the changes meditation makes in your life will become a priority to follow.

Meditation takes away the stress that accumulates through daily life. Starting a practice in the right manner allows you to learn more about yourself and let the mind be clear. Open yourself to peace and patience.
